As you'll probably be aware, DC59 has one washable filter, engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum. We recommend washing this at least once a month using cold water without detergent, as shown in the video below:
Always allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it - this may take at least 24 hours. Replacing the filter when damp could cause damage to the machine not covered under guarantee, and could also contribute to any odour coming from the vacuum. It may help to place the filter somewhere warm to dry, such as by a radiator, in an airing cupboard or on a sunny window sill.
Please note, the cyclone pack and clear bin should never be washed or submerged in water as this could cause permanent damage to the vacuum. However, it is possible to separate the clear bin from the cyclone pack as shown below. You can then use a soft brush to remove any fluff or debris from the mesh shroud, and you can wipe the inside of the clear bin with a damp cloth to remove any clinging dust particles. Make sure the bin is completely dry before reassembling.
I hope this helps, but if you'd like any further advice on cleaning or maintaining your DC59, please give our experts a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).
You need to have the vacuum cleaned out. If you are good with tools, just remove the motor and fans assembly, take the fans off and wash them. Brush ALL dirt out of the housing and reassemble. Your Electrolux dealer can do this but it isn't cheap. I used to be the service manager for my area. Since it isn't under warranty, you can have ANY reliable vacuum cleaner shop give a good cleanout. NEVER put anything into the cleaner to make it smell good. Electrolux cleaners get their power by having a straight through suction. The air goes through the motor. Adding smelly things can crystallize onto the motor and burn it out.
Yes. You can take the filter bag off the Kirby. just press the button at the top of the bag to release the bag, and just unscrew it at the base... and hand was in warm water using some nice smelly detergent.... hang out in the sun to dry..... and replace the paper filter bag more often.... I need to as I have 3 dogs and the dog hair does smell after a few days inside the filter bag, so I replace the filter bags quite often to stop any smelling... Bugbuyer
I have the Dyson DC 28. After cleaning out the filter multiple times I still had the wet dog smell coming out from the vacuum. I called Dyson's support line. The rep told me to put dryer sheets in the clear plastic bin and let it run for about 5-10 mins, make sure the bin is clear of all debris first. I did it and it worked. Not only is the smell gone, the dryer sheets removed all the remaining dust stuck in the bin. I was happy!
Have you replaced the post motor filter? It could be time to do that.
Perhaps your cyclones are clogged as well. You can find steps to disassemble and clean your cyclone, pretty easy actually. Only 6 parts inside there and they only go together one way so you can't screw it up. Search google for dc14 cyclone disassembly and you'll probably find the video. I just did my DC17 and it took about an hour total to take apart, clean and then reassemble. You can also take the opportunity to wash all the parts and disinfect with a mild water bleach solution. That'll help with the smell.
I am betting though that your post motor and premotor filters are the blame for the smell.
I bought my DC 17 from some lady who used it to clean her cat's litter boxes. Cyclones were totally clogged after only 6 months. What do you expect from poop and wet kitty litter. She said it was junk and bought a $1500 Kirby in it's place. She's gonna have some new and interesting smells with that machine sucking up wet kitty litter.
Cleaning and replacing the bag may help-it sounds like it may have gotten wet at one time. You couls also sprinkle baking soda lightly over your carpet and that may help absorb odours in the system. If the hose is detachable and any other pieces you can wash them with a vinegar solution. Hope that helps.

It sounds like you will need to first clean it very well if you haven't yet and then most likely the problem is the rear hepa filter is ruined due to having sucked up what you did and gotten some on the filter. Each time you turn on the machine hot air is blown through it and can smell very foul. I had gotten mine wet once from the machine tipping over and had to replace it because it started smelling moldy. Very easy job to do and its about 25 bucks and you can find them on ebay or other places. Hope this helps
My guess would be a slightly loose belt - tight enough to spin the roller on a hard floor, but loose enough to slip (then get hot and stink) when the roller is having to work against the pile of a carpet.
Worth buying and fitting a new belt without pausing to investigate further, simply because they're so cheap and you'll have to replace it sooner or later anyway.
