Phillips 55pp9527/79 convergence

After moving house, the convergence has gone out of whack, but when I try to adjust it, it seems that the crosses do not move at all, therefore it cannot be re-converged. It seems as though there is no power to whatever makes the crosses move. Any answers?

I am having the same problem. I hauled this behemoth, 1994 PTV520-AH01 52" Magnavox, up three tight flights of stairs and plug it in and everything is fine; all of a sudden the cable gets disconnected from me moving it and I plug it back in and the convergence is all messed up. I tried going into the advanced settings and adjusting the crosses but they do not move. This is a very frustrating problem! Can anyone expand on this? I mean on top of what Shutle83 already posted? BTW thanks Shuttle83 for the advice!

Shuttle 83 - Projection TV tubes do not have shadow masks and therefore do not require degaussing.
I agree - get an expert to fix it as you can make more damage than you cure if you don't know what you're talking about.

Two things may have happened. First you may just need to degauss the CRTS. Let me explain when you move your TV you often cut across flux lines (magnetic lines of force) these have then tendency to magnetize your screen mask (a metal component in the CRT that slows down electrons) and cause what is sometimes misdiagnosed as a convergence problem. All that has to take place is a once over with a degaussing coil and the problem is fixed. The other thing that could have happened is the your convergence correction amplifiers have gone bad. This will require that you replace both modules (STK392-110). If you have a background in electronics you can perform these tasks, however if you don not have a background in electronics, I would suggest that you contact a qualified TV repair shop to service your TV set.

I hope this helps,

Thank You,

Shuttle83

How do you access the convergence calibration menu on a RCA P52926 Rear Projection TV

Hello
To access the convergence calibration:

Press the MENU button on the remote.

2. Press 3 to select the Screen option.

3. Press 4 to select the Adjust Projection TV option.

4. Press 4 to select the Advanced Convergence option (the
Advanced Convergence screen appears).

The green pattern is fixed. The red and blue patterns are adjusted to

the green pattern. The Red Convergence appears first by default.

5. Colored cross-hairs show the current adjustment position on the

grid. To move the cross-hairs to a different position, use the

CH+/- buttons on the remote to move the cross-hair highlight up

and down, and the VOL+/- buttons to move it right and left.

6. Use the arrow buttons to adjust the red pattern. Each press of

the arrow button makes a slight adjustment from the center of

the cross-hairs - you can press and hold the desired arrow

button to make a faster adjustment, and then make fine

adjustments with single presses of the arrow button.

7. Press the INFO button to switch to Blue convergence and follow

the steps above to adjust the blue pattern.

8. Press OK to exit. You will be asked if you want to save the
adjustments

Yes Saves adjustments.

No Returns to the Advanced Convergence screen allowing

further adjustments.
Clear Exits screen without making any changes

Note: Before you use the advanced convergence feature, you must
complete the previous steps to align the tubes

Covergence out of alignment on 1/4 Vertical left side of screen

You need to manually adjust the alignment:
On remote, press Menu to get to the main menu
Then arrow down to "ADVANCED FEATURES"
Then press "enter"
Then Arrow down to "CONVERGENCE" and press "enter"
"Red Convergence" should be highlighted
Press "enter"
You now have Green, Red, and Blue overlapping crosses.
If Red is out of whack, use arrows to align
To toggle to blue (and back to red), press "VIDEO"
Then align blue cross
Once the crosses look aligned, and nice and white, press "AUDIO"
This will bring up the Advanced Convergence screen
This is a grid of the same overlapping colors
You have control over the Red and Blue
If Green is very out of whack, you'll need a repairman…
While the "target" is flashing, you can move it around the screen with the arrows
Place it over an intersection to adjust, then press "enter"
Now the "target" is steady (not flashing), and you can use the arrows move your color
When it's aligned, press "enter" again
Now "target is flashing, and you can go to the next square.
You cannot adjust every intersection.
Some areas need to be adjusted via the adjacent intersection
When you're happy with color you're working on,
Press "video" while target is flashing to change to the other color
Repeat the above (blue is much harder to see and adjust for me…)
When you're happy with the entire grid, start hitting "Menu"
Each press brings you back out one menu level, until you are out of them
Once you're used to the process, it should take no more than a minute or two.

Red "aura" in the middle of my 55" Phillips Magnavox

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
