Reseting the BIOS on eMachines 270

My PC recently under went a change of Operating System (Windows Vista to Windows XP). All seemed to work well for about 20 mins until it came to restarting my PC, it shut down correctly, and seemed to start ok, but

the startup (when i press the power button);

black screen with some info about the graphics card and some versions.

Then an eMachines logo splash image pops up (Being eMachines this is normal) but then this apears: "Error : The system fan has failed, have system serviced immediately. System will power down in 5 seconds"

I know for a fact that there is a setting in bios that should disable the system fan detection, and that by defualt, the system fan detection should be disabled. I think it has somehow been re-enabled and since the system fan is not controlled by the system, the BIOS checks it as failed,

Where can i find the BIOS reset on my motherboard to make sure that these settings are as they should be? The motherboard is the original board that came with the machine from the store but i cant find any info on it, much less where the BIOS reset is.

Can anyone help me here?

Boot sequence for emachine M6811

As SOON as you press the Power On button, start tapping on the DELete key.
Tap in 2 second intervals.

You may hear beeps. This is a Stuck Key Error Beep. (Or beeps)
Ignore the beeps.

You will now be in the BIOS Setup utility.

The BIOS program is made by Phoenix.
It is Version NSF03.P0
Release date - 07/28/2004

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2170#specs

Scroll the page down a little, until you come to the bold heading -
EMachines Desktop Replacement Notebook Specs

Scroll down until you see the sub-heading - Detailed specs
Left-click on - Click here to See appendix for detailed specs
Now look under the bold heading - DMI, and [ BIOS ]

When you are in the BIOS Setup utility, you CANNOT use your mouse
anymore. You have to use your Keyboard.

At the top of the BIOS Setup utility you will see headings;
Main, Advanced, Security, Power, Boot, and Exit.

The BIOS Setup utility automatically opens to the Main screen.

Use the Right Arrow key, and stop on the - Boot - tab

What is listed is a Boot Order.
In the list of the Boot Order are Boot Devices.

What is at the TOP is the first boot device the laptop will boot from.

Should be;
1) CD-ROM Drive
2) Removable Devices
3) Hard Drive
4) Network

Having CD-ROM Drive at the top allows you to install a different Operating System, that the laptop did not have from the factory.

ALSO; Windows DOES NOT like to be written over, with a lesser operating system, or the SAME version of operating system.

Examples;
Trying to install Windows 98SE, on a Windows computer that has Windows XP on it.

Trying to install Windows XP, on a Windows computer that has Windows XP already on it.

Using CD-ROM Drive as the first boot device, will allow you to install what you wish.

[ Doesn't work for installing Windows XP over Windows Vista. There is a special procedure ]

If I haven't answered your question, or you have additional questions, please post in a Comment.

How to downgrade from windows 7 to xp on emachine laptop

If it is a new emachine, then it proberly will not let you. There is a problem with drivers. certain pieces of the hardware might no have any drivers that are supported by XP.. The best thing you can do is check the emachine website to see if any drivers XP. If so then follow this basic guide to format and re-install XP on your PC.

I have just bee to Driverguide and the Vista driver is not there. I have requested it for information purposes, but you should request it yourself, to be sure. If it turns up, I will check to see you have it. Ian.
