My Dell laptop (inspiron) had sub-par memory, so I upgraded it last night to a 2GB card. I motored down, took the battery out, removed the old 512 card and replaced it with the new one. I replaced the battery, pushed power and almost nothing happened. The green power button will light up and the little briefcase with an A inside of it lights up. Then, the machine dies. Any ideas?

You could have incompatible RAM modules, try inserting only one RAM module to see if it works.
Check your laptop specs it may only support 1Gb.

How can I upgrade/improve the capabilities of my Inspiron 1200

The best and quickest improvement is to add more RAM. Add another 512 Mb of RAM. If you already have a 512 Mb of RAM module then add another 512 Mb RAM module. If your laptop has 2X256 Mb RAM modules then you need to remove these and insert 2X512 Mb RAM modules.
The reason why you have 504 Mb RAM is that the video card has grabbed 8Mb of RAM off the main memory.

How much RAM can my MOBO take?

Hi,

The laptop has 2 memory banks. Each bank will support 1GB 400Mhz, so maximum memory the motherboard supports is 2GB.

Upgrading ram on laptop, new ram not recognized.

remove the bios battery for a few seconds...and place it back on ...this will make it see the new ram memory modules...if you are sure they are compatible ..they will work .....in fact ..the ddr1 333 512 M is more that compatible with your system and it will work after you remove the battery ...\ my recommendation is to reinstall a clean operation system after you boot up ...and format the C partition too...this have to be done after memory changes to get the max out of them ..

Dell Inspiron 1100 won't read 512 Meg ram.

I had the same problem. I tried several brands of memory unsuccessfully, though they all guaranteed that their products would work with my machine. Finally, my brother (who works in IT) recommended that I go through The Upgrade Place (http://www.theupgradeplace.com/). Great price - less than half of what Dell charges - and the memory worked immediately upon installation.

When I told them that I had a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop, they said that my PC required proprietary memory (which is true). I paid with a credit card and received the part two days later.

Good luck,
