SOURCE: ps3 shuts down

It's a over heating issue. Make sure it isn't on carpet, in a closed cabinet, or any other enclosed area, also make sure it isn't next to a heating vent. Let it cool down for a few hours, and it should be ok.

SOURCE: HELP!!!! My ps3 won't turn on. Stuck with red light on

Be sure to folleow these instructions to the letter, you could damage your PS32_bing.gif if you choose the wrong option! I do not take any responsibility! Please proceed at your own risk! If you read and follow the instructions exactly you should not loose any data! Feel free to ask questions if you are confused so you don’t make a mistake!! Sorry, I had to say it, I don’t want anyone mad at me if they make a mistake, don’t back up their data and erase it, and then blame me…

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The current version of the ps3 firmware has a “recovery console”.
You access it by

1. Start with having the system in standby (redlight is on)

2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.

3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)

4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button

You will now have a screen with these options

1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.

CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION HERE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA. The one that fixed my blu-ray drive is option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

I REPEAT CHOOSE RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

After this, it is going to restart and bring up a screen reading something like “you have Corrupted System Data. Your PS will now replace this data” Then you choose continue and that should be it.

This option reinstalls the system files and drivers inside the PS3 with the original ones that are stored on your hard drive. In this case, it replaced a corrupted driver for the blu ray drive thus fixing my issue and hopefully yours!! This option will only replace all system files thus saving you from loosing any data that’s stored on your hard drive. Again this option does nothing to your hard drive it reads a file from the drive and rewrites it to the PS3 system.

Here is a video of the recovery screen.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0SPmkV-jco

If you want a more technical understanding of what this is really doing continue reading. DO NOT NEED TO READ THIS TO COMPLETE REPAIR. The PS3 does not boot from your hard drive as a computer does. It has a flash memory like a cell phone that stores all system files and system firmware updates that you get when the PS3 updates. This is why reformatting your hard drive will not fix your problem, none of the system files are stored on your hard drive (ex. XMB, system firmware, etc.) nor do they run from the drive. However, your hard drive does contain a full backup of your SYSTEM files and thus when you choose option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM it rewrites the original system files from your drive (which aren’t corrupted) back to the flash

The PS3 will power on to green when power pushed. but has to be held down to power off.Won't reset. No video, Controller won't sync. Disc acts like it's playing. Only beeps when on then when off.

It sounds like the same symptoms of the RLOD. (Red Light of Death) I assume you know what that means because you stated you checked the heat sinks and solder joint. When you checked everything, did you use a heat gun and replace the gel on the cpu and mcu? Those solder joints are almost undetectable, and a simple fix with a heat gun. A big must though. Replace the heat gel that separates the frame from the heat sink. Very important!

If you have a "slim" ps3, it does not beep 3 times. Try this.
First, with the system off, plug in your old red, white, yellow cables into the tv. (make sure your tv is on the correct setting). Now, just turn on the ps3 the regular way. Did you hear the sounds it normally makes when booting up (the ps3 boot music?). If so, thats good. If you did not, check again that the tv is on the right channel, and if possible, try another set of red, white, yellow cables.

If you heard sound, but do not get a picture, turn the ps3 back off. After the red light comes on, hold your finger down on the power button for about 5 seconds. If you have a fat ps3, it will beep 3 times after a few seconds to get back to regular tv mode. If you have a slim ps3, it will beep once, then 1 more time a few seconds later. It should reset and turn back on. If your tv is on the right channel and the cables work, then you should now see a picture and you know your audio/video is working. You can now try your HDMI cable and it should prompt you to use the HDMI at this point.

Hope that helps.
Mike!

Bought a used (assumingly broken) 160gb PS3 Slim yesterday. When I first plugged it in, I got a full green light, the fan was on, but I was getting no video. I let it sit there for around 15 minutes, and...

There could be so many things wrong with this unit..

If you are getting the light sequences, but at times it powers up, then you will have your hands full with troubleshooting.

Try accessing the recovery menu 'safe mode'.

Press and hold the power button until the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds)

Press and hold the power button again until you here 3 beeps. Let go.

It should ask you to connect your controller via usb and press the PS button in

the middle of your controller. (if applicable, try to use both HDMI and AV, switching from one input to another on the TV)

There will be a menu with 6 options.

If you do not see this menu with either HDMI or AV/Component cables, you will need to try replacing the hard drive..

When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a

usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the

PS3. Good luck..

You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive.

When you need to power down the system when it freezes, hold the power button until it goes off. At times it can take up to 2 minutes, or more.

Has it ever been opened?

Look underneath the system, do you see a 'Warranty Seal' sticker?

If not, it has been opened and your problems will have to be solved by a technician who has experience.

Good luck with this unit.

When I turn on my ps3 system on, there is no signal on my T.V.

With the system off, hold down the power button on your PS3 for 10 seconds. This should set everything back to factory defaults. If that doesn't work, try holding it down until you hear the beep that sounds when the system turns on. Keep it held until you hear 2 more beeps, and release it instantly. If it doesn't work after that, then its going to be a problem with either the power supply, meaning that its missing some off the voltages which powers on the system properly or the main board is bad, at that point you would have to call Sony Tech Support.
