During agitation it sounds like it is slipping and grinding

Help@@!!!!

Just a few days ago, I noticed that when the agitation cycle started, it sounded like grinding every few seconds.  What could this be?

I don't see any water leaking in the tray.  The spin cycle works fine.  It seems like the sound is coming from the area where the agitator is.

Iam listening to it now.  It is in the 2nd cycle agitation.  It will agitate for a few moments fine and then start to grind.

I have a Kenmore 70 series top loader that grinds and will not move the agitator, what do you think it is?

It could be a number of issues really.  Smaller issues could be something under the agitator, etc, to moderate problems, like a motor coupler, loose basket, etc.  Could also be a major problem like a motor or transmission.  A lot of times its the motor coupler or pump making the noise.  Both are pretty easy to replace.  Maybe some more information.  Do you happen to know where the noise is coming from?  Is it coming from the front of the cabinet or in the basket area?  Any small water leaks?  Does the spin cycle work ok?  Let me know some other information and maybe we can narrow down the problem to one particuliar area.   Jim

Noisy during agitate cycle whirlpool washer

Originally posted as solution to Kenmore 24992300 failure to agitate and loud whirring noise during spin cycle.... Hope this helps:

The problem as I noticed it was that the washer would start making a super high-pitched and very loud whirring noise during the spin cycle, and that when I would open the lid, the drum would not be spinning, but when I would close the lid, the drum would start spinning. I was okay with this during that load but after reading here and taking it apart, I realized what had happened:

The agitator dogs are supposed to have a 3-toothed profile on each one, but they become worn over time due to being made of a soft plastic. The dogs should "throw out" into an inner ring gear during normal operation, turning the entire drum. But when they became worn enough to slip, they would still throw out, grinding them at very high speed into the inner ring gear. Since they are made of a softer plastic than the gear, they were just getting more and more worn.

I assume the way this was supposed to fix itself was that when the outer tooth on the dog became worn, the next one would engage, but that didn't happen.

Because the dogs are made of such a soft plastic, I was able to cut a new tooth profile into each one, so that when they were put back in they would function correctly. It takes very little effort and a few minutes with an x-acto knife to cut the right profile.

I'm going to buy the replacement dogs, which being a manufacturer substitute will hopefully be made with a better tooth profile, from harder plastic, or both.

As another note, who knows how long the dogs weren't engaged correctly during agitation, causing clothes to sit without really being washed, but without the high pitched air raid siren. So probably a good idea to replace or repair them immediately, even if you can get it to work intermittently.

Why does washer make grinding metal sounds during wash cycle only?

When it is washing, look to see if the basket is moving at all. The basket should be stationary during the agitation cycle.

Fisher and Paykel ECS Washing machine agitator slipping?

There are "dogs" under tops of some agitators. Easy to repair. ID them and pull up washing machine parts at Amazon. Dogs are by themselves(3 hard plastic gadgets) but better to buy the whole thing that hold the dogs. Usually under $10.00.

Our whirlpool 5232d top loader is making grinding noises at the beginning of the wash cycle and the agitator seems to be slipping on its spindle though a little further on into the wash cycle the grinding...

Sounds like a bad transmisson or you room temp is below 30 making the oil in transmisson like tar. Or its just the dogs or top gears in the adj.

Loud noise during spin cycle and agitator won't rotate

the machine is nknown to have bad main seals, in turn leading to the corrosion of the spin bearing, in which case makes it sound as if a helicopter is landing in your laundry room
