Off balance during spin cycle

During the spin cycles the machine always starts jumping and banging around, badly off balance. Can you make any suggestions what may be wrong. Everything else seems to work fine

I have a 2004 Maytag Preforma, I have the same problem. Loud banging occures during the spin cycle as if it were unbalanced.  I does look like the basket is tilting more to one side.  This does not happen all the time, however quiet frequently.  My models is a PAVT244AWW.

Same problem with loud banging during spin cycle. Replaced set of 6 springs this seemed to cure the problem for a couple of months. Started all over about a month ago. Very careful to balance all loads. Sometimes this helped sometimes not. Checked springs and one of the new ones was broken. Replaced spring and it works pretty well. Still supersensitive to load balance. I spent around $500 so that I would not have to do this. Oh well.

I have a Performa Model PAV3200AWW that would go unbalanced every time it would go into a spin cycle. I found the problem to be a worn out snubber. This is a plastic ring that is at the pivot point for the whole tub. It separates the metal to metal contact at the bottom of the washer pivot point. The part is less than ten dollars, but it is a quit a job to replace. I had to remove the whole tub to replace mine, but it did solve the problem. If you see a lot of plastic shavings around the pivot point, then this could be your problem.

I have seen several posts concerning off balance washing machines. I have a Maytag Ensignia top load model MAV3757AWW. (3 1/2 y.o.) Sears repairman came out and gave estimate to replace the snubber for 350.00 - 400.00. Said I should just buy a new machine. We bought the snubber for 6.00 and my husband replaced it in about 1 1/2 hours. When we pulled the machine there was a pile of shavings (looked like parmesan cheese) under the machine...the snubber was completely gone!! We pulled the front off, unhooked the springs and the turned the machine over on its back, unhooked the pulley so the tub could be released. He held up the tub and I replaced the snubber...the big job was getting the springs hooked back!!! Anyway..it functions like brand new!!! I paid over 500.00 for this machine thinking I wouldn't have any problems. I will not buy a Maytag product again, EVER!! Maytag customer service is terrible!!

Remove the front cover (usually two clips between the top and the front, move it around) and check each of the springs that hold the unit to the base.  Have found that just one spring would cause a out-of-balance condition.  When you open the lid, does the basket seem to be leaning one way or the other?  If so, look on the side that shows more than the other.  Also, reach in and grab the inner basket to see if it seems loose.  Have had the basket drive mount break halfway through and caused it to roll really bad.  Let me know what you find out, or if you need futher help.  Jim

Replace snubber ring and suspension springs. I believe that overloading and loading washing machine unbalanced, often, causes the springs and snubber ring to go prematurely. I even found that if the motor that drives the belt, that drives the pulley thats under the snubber area can cause the snubber to fail and give you the walking, banging noisy washing machine, if bolts arent tight enough to keep belt tight. So.... 1... take off front panel. 2.... roll washing machine to its back or far enough back to where you can can check motor bolts for tighness. 3... if bolts are tight and belt is tight, then stand machine back up. 4.... remove suspension springs.... 5 roll machine back on its back. 6... remove belt 7....remove pulley cap 8 remove pulley shaft "C" clamp(watch for other parts to see how they go back on. 9 remove pulley . 10 stand machine back up and lift whole basket out of machine casing. 11 turn upside down. 12...loosen i repeat loosen dont remove 5/16 screws. 13 remove whats left of snubber replace with new snubber. 14... put basket back put washer then pulley then other washers and c clamp back on, place belt back on( make sure the motor is secure in place) and belt tight, stand machine back back up replace springs, replace front of cabinet. I know im late but its for the next DIY Guy or Gal. For a HAV240aww maytag washer.

Also, when you replace the Snubber, replace all (6) Springs, you will then have essentially a new machine.

Machine makes loud banging noise during the spin cycle

The load is out of balance. Open the lid and redistribute the contents. When it's empty, grab the basket and give it a slight push sideways. It should move a little but, not free swing. If it doesn't have much resistance, the "snubber" has dried out and should be replaced. It is simply a piece of rubber in a metal bracket, that rests on the tub. When the basket spins, the snubber keeps it from jumping around.

This washing machine has self-leveling rear legs. Tilt the machine up on the front legs and you'll hear the back legs drop down to re-level itself. Center the basket and restart.
