My Tv was doing the same thing. Got the light replaced and it fixed the problem. Glad I still had warranty, the tech. said the light is around $350!
I had a Best Buy Repair man come out and he confirmed that it was in deed the Optical Light Engine. And he quoted me a price of $800 plus to fix it. That's the part, labor, and taxes. I said, HELL no. So I went and bought plasma with a 4 year warranty. For $1,800.00 I will not sink more money into this t.v. I will hold onto it, wait for the part to go down, then repair it. Think about it......Not to mention the repair man said the lamp (not the optical engine light) goes out about once a year. Your talking, $200.00 a year to replace the light. Hell no again. Sorry people but we got screwed on this t.v. Plasmas are cheaper than ever and they have no light to go out. Smart choice. Get the warranty!
Toshiba is full of it. The tech on the phone said he himself had only heard of it once, but that they didn't put such things into the system to allow all of them to know if this is a known problem. It has to go through corporate or some crap he said. I told him to write it down, make a note of it and inform whoever needs to know because it is a KNOWN issue and Toshiba needs to extend the warranty on that just as they did the bulb that was blowing. Call them and tell them to make a note.

Is your TV the Toshiba 52hm95? I had a similar problem but my TV went out completely. I had a service tech out this morning..it was my light engine and will be $900.00 to 1000.00 to fix. I hope that's not your problem too...Toshiba said they have had no other reports of such a problem with this particular tv.

I have the same proboem with the exact same t.v. Mine will be 2 years old next month. I've called several local repair shops and they say it sounds like the Convergance? Not sure yet, haven't had them out, but have been online looking into the problem, to see if it's something we can fix ourselves. Good luck!
I'm having the same problem. Flickering whether it's on xbox, dvd, cable, etc. Toshiba said the same to me; "No one has reported this problem on this model" It's out of warranty, 2 years old this month. I can't believe (well, I can actually) that it's going to cost $1,000 to fix when you can get a new one for not much more. I love the tv, but now I feel like I'm dating the best lover in the world--who punches you in your sleep.
A 2 year shelf life is retarded. I'm going to try the same solution that worked on my xbox (a NOTORIUS hardware troublemaker); blow cool air into it. Electricity attracts dust, which can cause minor short circuiting and overheating. After using a hair dryer set to "cool" on it for three minutes it blew out a ton of dust and cleared up all my problems; maybe it'll work for the tv. It's better than paying out to the Electronic Mafia. I claim no responsiblity for those who try this and screw it up more...:)
I'm having the same problem with my screen flickering. My TV is only a little over two years old and after about 6 months I had to replace the bulb. What the hell. I paid 1950 for this TV and it seems like junk. I'm very disgusted.
Have the same problem...light flickering background, and any color along the red, orange, yellow or white stage is so bright it looks like lava. It's horrible.... I loved this tv, but I refuse to spend a grand to fix it. I will buy new if I have to, and certainly not a Toshiba.
2 years and 2 months old, exact same problem, already replaced bulb...
Toshiba Rep said the exact same thing, he had NEVER heard of this problem, whatsoever. I told him that I had read about it on this site and others, and get this...
He says that some guy is going around creating multiple logons and making these posts about the 52HM95, and Toshiba has traced his IP address and going after him seeking a legal remedy.
If Toshiba has stooped to this level of cover up, this must be one heck of an expensive potential recall that they are facing.
Either all of you are the same poster with the same IP address, or it seems that Toshiba may be guilty of a huge cover up and outright fraud, "in my opinion, based on what I have seen and heard"!
Their corporate name is now mud as far as I am concerned...they might want to consider a new branding campaign for their HD TV lineup...
Only when the fan is turned on, does the flickering stop. When only the light is on, it flickers.
