Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You'll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don't short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.

John deere lt155 lawn tractor shuts off when it gets hot while mowing, could this be electrical?

I had a similar problem lasy year.
Try this:
As soon as the machine seems to be stalling, loosen the gas cap.
If the engine continues to run, clean the gas cap vent hole(s).

318 dies after it runs for 20 minutes. It cools down and start up and runs for awhile longer. Has been into the dealer twice and still has problem. Coil and condensers have been changed. Tractor runs...

On the later models with the 220 series engine you would have a trigger/pickup coil mounted just below the stator with 2 screws. After reaching full engine temp the coil will short out. This has been a problem for the later 318's.On the earlier models with the 218 series engine (the one with points)I would suspect the ignition module under dash.

I'm wanting to change points & condenser

At that age, it's highly likely that there aren't any! You don't say what engine is fitted, but if it's a Briggs or a Tecumseh, they went solid state in 1982. If that's the case, just replace the coil module.

I have a older mmodel 318 riding mower with an onan motor. wruns very well but when it is hot outside it will shut down withinabout a minute the power will reinitiate and the tractor can be restarted ....

possibly a carb or coil problem. does it have point type ignition? if so try replacing the condensor.if nothing else changes try replacing the fuel filter. then nothing,a float sticking in the carb or a bad coil.

JOHN DEERE 318 LAWN TRACTOR WONT START

ok, since you have the points, I assume you have the B43g Onan
engine. Was it running before the new parts were installed?
Check your point gap and make sure it is .016, plugs ahould be gapped at .025 Make sure your plug wires are good too. Should be somewhere between 0 and 10,000 ohms per foot, when measured with an ohmmeter. Once everything is rechecked for gap distance, make sure there is no spark by pulling plug out, leaving wire on and ground the outside of plug to the chassis of the tractor.
Crank over and look for the spark. Coils are about $100, so you want to eliminate everything else first.
Diagnosing a points ignition for no spark is really simple. Do you have 12V at the coil? Do you get a spark when you connect and disconnect the negative terminal of the coil to ground? If not you have a bad coil.

Fuse blows when engage blade

The electro-magnetic coil side of your PTO is shorted out.On the 318 it is very easy to replace, just under front screen.
