Question about Canon PowerShot S500 IXUS 500 Digital Camera
I got a powershot S500. when I turn on the camera the lcd sceen stays black . I could use the menu or setting and it appear on the lcd sceen, but no picture is beening display . If I take a picture all it will show is a black sceen. Please give me some advise.
My Ixus 500 just started a not-so-similar problem. When I turn it on, the screen can be white or the correct picture but with a section repeated, or similar funky images. After a few seconds it usually goes white when in Camera Mode.
When I switch to View mode it sometimes shows the pictures perfectly. Sometimes the screen flickers or is white or black.

Yep, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

I just found an answer!! It appears that the camera has a CCD problem that a wire connected to CCD (camera sensor) comes off. It's manufacture defect and has affected more than 20 Canon models. Canon repairs this problem for free regardless of it's warranty status. Check out the link.

Have you checked the display mode you're in? If you have the display set to off (to save power) and also the picture review time set to off, then you'll just see a black screen. Try pressing the 'Disp.' button below the screen when the camera is on - it should cycle through different settings with each press: Off, On, On with picture info. Similarly, in the playback mode this will show you more or less info about the picture you are viewing. Even if the display is switched off, if you have your 'review' option in the menu set to anything other than Off (i.e. 2 seconds), then you should see the picture you've taken appear on the screen straight after taking it. If it's not that, then I don't know the answer....

I Have a very similar problem. The camera had been working fine for last 3 years. Now suddenly after not using for 3 months, the display stays blank for picture shooting. The LCD works fine while reviewing the pictures. Also if we shoot the picture, the picture is blank. Any solution yet to the original problem?
i got the same prob. its not about the display because it doesn't even taking the picture. the screen stays black and apear black in the viewing storage also. i dont realy know what to do. anyone?...
I have the same problem, too!! In addition, when I shake the camera, I can hear some noises. I can also see some flash lines on the LCD when the camera is on. I can review the photos but can't take any pictures. Please help!
Sorry, I didn't read the website correctly ...
My Ixus 500 just started a similar problem to some others. When I turn it on, the screen can be white or the correct picture but with a section repeated, or similar funky images. After a few seconds it usually goes white when in Camera Mode. I can still take pictures and the shutter sound goes and the flash works.
When I switch to View mode it sometimes shows the pictures perfectly. Sometimes the screen flickers or is white or black. When I can see the pictures I took, they appear to be OK.
I doesn't seem to be the CCD issue mentioned below.
I will try opening and looking for loose connections when I get me another set of jewellers screwdrivers.
Canon Ixus500. LCD screen flickers when camera is turned on. The camera will still take a photo and I can view this on playback. Spoke to a salesperson in a camera shop who mentioned the CCD problem but did state that this would only be repaired by Canon free of charge if it was under warranty (my warranty has expired). I have since contacted Canon Australia who said that they will repair the problem free of charge as long as it is the CCD causing the flickering screen. All in all they were quite helpful.
