Question about Apple eMac G4 Desktop
An update would not prevent the machine from accessing a server, unless other changes in the machine configuration was made. If you are running Tiger (10.4) go tot he apple on the top left, 4 lines down is SYSTEM PREFERENCES. Under INTERNET & NETWORK, you want to select NETWORK. Location should be AUTOMATIC and SHOW should be NETWORK STATUS. From there you should see all the connections in the list below. Next to BUILT IN ETHERNET you should see a color dot either red green or yellow. If the dot is red but there is a cable there, then the cable has gone bad. If the dot is yellow and the cable is in the port, then your computer detects an acgtive signal but your configuration is incorrect, like your ip address is being used by another machine, If the dot is green, then your machine recognizes a stable and active signal. YOu may need to just reset your tcp/ip settings. There are a few more options like unplugging you router for a few seconds, or puling out the ethernet cable from the computer and re-inserting it.
Hope this help

Bought a emac at an an local school board auction. It would not connect to internet. Did all of the things in first solution. That did not work, but solution #2 did the trick! Thank you!! I am amazed at the power of the internet and a good search engine. All it takes is the right question/s and perservarance.

Thanks - tried everything but it appears my ethernet socket must be faulty or is not being recognised by the software
Have the same problem with the internet connection. Comcast was out telling me the connection on their end shows their modem works, but I still cannot connect to internet. Tried resetting modem, disconnect everything, etc. Still nothing. Comcast said my emac needed a new video card? Does that have anything to do with ethernet connection?
thanks,
