HP dvd740b Internal Dual Layer DVD Burner w/ LightScribe Issues
Alright, here's the deal, after a long time of using Linux (Xubuntu to be exact) on my main machine; I switched back to using Windows XP Pro SP3.
System Specifications:
CPU: Intel Celeron D 2.53 GHz RAM: 1.0 GB (2 x 512 MB Sticks) MB: MSI PM8M3-V (With VIA Chipset) Vid: Diamond Stealth ATi Radeon 9550 (128 MB RAM) AC: Realtek AC97 Onboard HDD: Maxtor DiamondMax 120 GB 7200 RPM HDD CD: Iomega CD-R/RW 52x24x52x Drive (IDE) DVD: HP dvd740b With LightScribe (IDE), (Updated to latest Firmware) OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
I know the drive works, it's hooked up correctly and it reads CDs reliably without question. However, the drive will not read DVDs (Standard or Otherwise) and I can't seem to get it to do it no matter what I do. It just keeps saying that there is no DVD in the drive when I know there is. I have had issues with Windows XP Pro SP3 before, could this be the problem? Whenever I insert a DVD the green light blinks a few times as if it is attempting to read the disk and then nothing happens, what's causing this?
Solutions Tried:
Updated Firmware to Latest Revision on HP Website Uninstalled Drive from Device Manager and Rebooted Checked Cabling to Ensure Secure Connections
If anyone could help me out here, it would sure be appreciated; please and thank you?
I applied the Microsoft Fix, as directed by greg_margo above, but it said it did not apply to my system, so I tried to directly edit the registry as I was instructed on the Microsoft website, and that still does not work. All I keep getting out of the DVD drive is the same thing. It reads CDs and installs from them and everything else, so I don't think it's the reader, what could it be?

Also, I checked the Device Manager again and tried to use my CyberLink PowerDVD software that came with the drive and it tells me I have 2 CD drives, does this mean that windows is just recognizing it as a CD drive and not a DVD Drive? If so how do I fix this problem?

As long as you have a lightscribe drive it's really simple. Burn the disc as usual, put in upside down, ie label side down and using the lightscribe program burn you image to the disc.
See the www.lightscribe.com site for the latest program and templates etc etc.
We use ours all the time and it is like magic, especially if you use colour lightscribe discs. Cheers, Rob
the fix is usualy "upper and lower filter removal" easiest way is with filtercheck 4.6 at cdr-zone.com forums. click yes to all then reinstall your favorite burning app.
Try re-installing the software associated with the burner, so it installs the necessary drivers and files needed for the burner to work according to your needs.
Also check the connections and cables... sometimes moving it around causes the cables to loose some contacts.
