I have the same problem. Always worked fine but suddenly won't accept ANY brand of dvd+. Says disk problem. I've wasted $90.00 on blank disks, and none work. Don't waste your time tring to get in touch with RCA, no help.
I also was having same issue's with blank DVD's with 16x or higher ratings. I remembered that when I first used the recorder their was only 1-4x write speeds available so I started to look for these specific dvd's. It took me a while but I did find some and ordered a set of 25 five to try and the recorder worked.
So the issue is that the recorder will not read any dvd rated more than 4x, and the under side of the dvd's rated 8x and faster are a different color that the laser is not able to read. The dvd's are made by Philips brand rated at 1x-4x and are DVD+RW, I haven't found the DVD+R' yet but am still looking.
I found these DVD's at www.tigerdirect.com and the minimum amount was a 25 disc spindle but I think you could get 50 or 100 but am not sure so look around a bit but these will work. I put one in my DVD recorder and was formatted within a minute and was asked if I wanted to name the disc which I had not seen in a while.
Anyway you all can use your recorders again and my dad will get to use hid for the first time as he has had this problem right out of the box!!! I think the owners manuel specify's you to use 1x-4x but am not positive.

That's the type I was using (as well as Maxell +RW. I finally had to take it in to be serviced, but the laser was beyond fixing. RCA would not send a replacement because they no longer make them.

I just posted my problem and realized that from the photo, it's really the same model, same problem. Looking at cake stacks of DVD's of different brands all over the floor here and none of them work. Can't believe the machine is kaputz! Is it kaputz?!
I also have the same disc error problem when trying to record to new DVD's. I have tried different brand DVD's (all are compatible according to the manual that came with the unit) Now, the unit is also locking up when playing the DVD's. Not just a home recorded one, but also store-bought ones as well.
My RCA wont play dvds but will play audio cd's now i have a expensive cd player HELP.
I have the exact same problem - have wasted so many DVD's...Pls let me know when there is a solution.
All, I have a similar issue. I have been using Maxel 8X disks. Just yesterdeay I bought som more maxell and they are not working, saying a problem with the disk. Further inspection revealed they are 16X disks I wonder if this unit only works with older 8X disks? Are they still available?
