Kdc-x879 won't recognize cd feature

I have lost the ability to access the cd feature. The display does only gives me the option of tuner. sirus, and standby. I can not get the face to open to the cd player. It did work at one time, but no more. I tried pushing the reset button, but all that did was cause me to have to reset all  presets on my radio stations. can you help? Thanks

I am sorry to tell you this, but there is no easy fix after pressing the reset button. The unit is not even recognizing the cd player, so it could be one of many different problems, all of them being electronic and inside the unit.

It could be a voltage regulator that supplies the cd deck, it has 3 of them. It could be the ribbon cable that connects the cd deck to the main board, but that is more unlikely. It could even be the microprocessor.
There is just no way to be certain without putting it on a test bench and troubleshooting it with the schematic in front of you.

If you have some electronic troubleshooting skills, I can email the schematic to you. I have it in PDF format and you can check it out as long as you have a power supply, multimeter and knowledge of electronics.

Otherwise, you will need to take it in to an authorized Kenwood repair center.

I hope you found this helpful, but you do have a serious problem with the unit.

I have been repairing these type of radios since they started making them a couple of years ago and this problem has had several different fixes for this same symptom and it has never been an easy fix.

let me know if you need more help

Try putting the unit in standby via the "SRC" button FIRST..., then press the menu button and cycle through to the "AUX 1" option and activate this....then press menu button again. When the unit is next switched on, you should have an "AUX" option accessible via the "SRC" button which will cycle through all of the availale modes ....standby-tuner-cd-aux etc etc.

it needs a new ribbon cable. Some car audio repair shops stock these (mine does). Part is about $20-30. Labor will depend on the shop.

Can't get to turn the sub On-Off

I had the same problem. The people at Kenwood are idiots when it comes to writing instructions. What you have to do is go to standby mode, hold the menu button until the menu displays. Now, scroll down to where it says "Rear." Push the control knob to the right. Now you have the ability to turn your sub on and off. Once that's done, just go back to CD or Tuner, push the knob down, hold for the two seconds, then it should say "On Sub." It took me a while to figure this one out.
