I can't access the SD card-reading function on the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder (new out of the box today). The H1 responds neither when connected to a PC nor to a Mac.
The device seems otherwise in order (powers up, records, plays back, etc.).
The USB cable (provided with the H1) works fine with other devices.
The H1's manual seems to say that the H1 should be connected to the comupter via USB while the H1's power is OFF. I've tried this, and tried it with its power on, but the H1 isn't detected by the computer, nor does the H1 seem to detect the connection, i.e. it doesn't behave as the manual says, alternately presenting "USB card" and "USB audio" messages. If its power is off, the screen displa remains off after being connected by USB, if it is on, the display is not affected EXCEPT for the fact that the battery icon disappears (suggesting that the H1 is at least drawing power from the computer).
I'd appreciate any ideas people might have.

when you record in .wav format, the files ARE better quality, however, they are ALOT larger than a standard .mp3...if you can't tell the 'loss in quality', i would suggest to keep recording as .mp3...but if a .wav is preferred, then i would suggest upgrading the SD card. ..hope this helps.
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
If your Zoom Handy Recorder H4n is stuck on the ZOOM window and you are unable to access the menu or use the recorder, there are a few things you can try to fix the issue:
Try restarting the recorder by turning it off and then back on again. This can often resolve software issues.
Check the battery level and make sure that the recorder has enough power to function properly. If the battery is low, charge it or replace it with a new one.
Try a hard reset by removing the batteries and/or the SD card, then press and hold the power button for 10 seconds before reinserting the batteries and/or SD card.
If the above steps do not work, try updating the firmware of the recorder. You can download the latest firmware from the Zoom website and follow the instructions for updating the firmware on your device.
If none of the above steps work, you may need to contact Zoom's customer support for further assistance. They may be able to provide additional troubleshooting steps or repair options.
It's important to note that if the recorder is still under warranty, you should contact Zoom for repair or replacement.
I just discovered the same problem with my H1. When plugged to computer, nothing happens neither. It turns out it may be just the contact issue. You will have to carefully disassemble it (you'll need one small screw driver. watch for the small wires). There are two PCB boards one on top of the other, and between them there is the contact that I believe came loose or dirty causing the issue. Play with that, and with battery in, try to turn it on.
OK... first thing is to make sure the SD card is 2 Gb or less as larger won't work.
Many of the SD card has a protect switch that prevents writing to the card... it is a real tiny littl thing to move with your fingernail. You might need a magnifier to see it.
If you are using a Mac running Leopard (Sys 10.5), you need to upgrade the H4 firmware from Zoom website
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/software/h4.php
You will need an external SD card reader.
Good Luck
