Stuck lens When I turn the camera on the shutter does not open and the lens appears to be stuck. An error message is on the screen. I have tried putting in new batteries but nothing seems to be working.

It sounds like the CCD has gone bad, in which case, the camera is not getting repaired, since it sits on the main circuit board, and you would have to buy the entire board, plus pay the extensive labor. Theirs oil on the shutter blades causing it to stay closed, Thats why you can't see though the lens or the viewfinder also, This comes from the grease from the zoom assy, It's a major job to fix it, Has to be fixed by a repair shop

Try to take off the battery and reset the camera. You can also try to remove the lens and check the mirror opening..see if there is some thing stuck there. You can try to click the shutter while the lens is removed. If this procedure didn't work I suggest calling Nikon for further repairs.

I had what sounds like the same problem. The camera was dropped and the shutter was stuck open. Just kept showing error message.
As I felt I had nothing to lose I began tapping it on a soft book and the shutter started to appear. I then shut it just using the end of my finger. When I then turned the camera on again it opened and shut when turned off. It has worked fine ever since.
Seems a rather poor design.

Dirt /dust in the lens and lens gear box ( this drives zooming only ) preventing optimum functioning. Lens cannot properly come on line ( shutter and diaphragh mechanism then do not come on line ) and the camera switches off. Solution : is ether replace lens unit or dismantle lens to clean out ( from gear box and the helicoil of the lens ).
