In the first instance I would check all connections. It could possibly be a wire not making proper contact. If that doesn't help, then look for the degauss or restore option on the monitor!
The discoloration problem is due to the near by magnetic field appliances like speakers which are very near to monitors ... so what you have to do is just keep some distance to the monitor from the speakers and other magnetic appliances and then press menu button & just give degauss..
Generally monitors do not actually have many options to adjust color balance. But you can adjust the colors through your operating system: Windows 7/Vista can be adjusted by following the instructions Here.
Probably the color temperature setting or some other color settings - since you didn't specify your monitor's brand and model, it's hard to guess. Anyway, most monitors have a "Reset to factory defaults" feature - you may want to make use of this...
Probably just some color balance is of. Reset white to something different on the compaq. Try downloading nvidia-settings and see what happens when you mess with color balances. Mess around with some settings til it looks right, or see if you can reset the white balance to a different preset on the monitor's menu
Take the reinstallation CD and boot from it. Then click R and It will ask what drive you wish to enter. hit the drive number you wish to enter. It will give you options. Once your in type fixboot. just as I have it and it will ask you if you wish to rewrite the boot sector. Hit Y and press enter. Then type exit and it will reboot. If that dosent work you will need to do a repair install. I will walk you through that if we need to.
So your sure when you go into the monitor settings, and color, it is set to like 9300k or something? It probably isn't the monitor, because the video games you said display just fine.
