I have a Sony Vaio Laptop. VGN FE28GP.
This model has S1 and S2 buttons above the keyboard.
I pressed the S1 button while working and the screen went black. It seems this button is a Shortcut key and appears to have put my monitor into sleep mode.
I have tried switching the Laptop off and on again. When I switch, I can see the Vaio startup and then the Windows XP startup. There is a whirring/humming sound and the screen goes black again.
I wonder if I have put the screen to sleep but I can't see anything to try to fix the problem.
Anybody got any ideas how I can get my screen live again?

Normally this issue happens after installing the a system related software or an upgrading/ reinstalling a operating system. Please read the below steps very carefully and follow the procedure below to resolve the issue.
Download and install the following application updates in the exact order they are given.
IMPORTANT:All of the listed application updates are available online. Software and driver updates for your Sony product are available online.
Audio Driver (most recent)
Video Driver (most recent)
Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver
Sony Shared Library Update
Sony Setting Utilities Update
VAIO Event Services Update (If available)
VAIO Launcher Software (S1/S2/AV Buttons)
If the above order does not work, try the order below.
Audio Driver (most recent)
Video Driver (most recent)
Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility or Sony Notebook Control Driver
Update first the firmware of your laptop. If the problem still occurs then contact your vendor for warranty there must be wrong on your screen's bezel and LVDS cable.
S1 and S2 buttons are called special Function keys. By default, the S1 button turns the Volume On or Off and the S2 button toggles the display between the LCD and the external devices. You can also change these buttons assignments on the window for changing the S button assignments. To display this window, press and hold either button or launch and navigate through VAIO Central (Start, All Programs, VAIO Central).
- Install Windows 7 - let it update all the drivers that it needs to - Install additional Sony drivers that you need (XP drivers work just fine, but make sure to install them in Administrator mode, so, Run as Administrator), such as camera, fingerprint scanner, etc - Install the Notebook Control Device Driver (without this the other software does nothing) - Sony Utilities DLL - Sony Shared Library
* restart computer *
- Sony Video Shared Library - SUS (Setting Utility Series)
* restart computer *
- VES (VAIO Event Service)
After this one the Fn keys will start to work. The S1 and S2 keys don't work due to something to do with UAC (but I don't need them anyway)
- VAIO Control Centre (will allow you to change what the S1 and S2 keys do, even though you can't use them :) )

eBay is the best place for this type of thing. It's way cheaper than any laptop depot I've come across.
Here's one for your keyboard:

As far as the screen is concerned; the way to get the best deal is to search by model number of the screen and not just laptop. The same screen can be used in several different laptops. Take your screen out and look on the back of it. There will be a model number there. Enter that model number into ebay's search, making sure you check product description to be included in the search query. Any screen matching that model number will fit your laptop just perfectly and it will save you a bundle.
Can you boot the system into Safe Mode successfully (it boots to a visible Desktop) or is the screen still blank?
