Check the memory - I'm willing to bet it's the memory and not the monitor.  Make sure the memory is compatiable with the memory that's already in there.

There are a few things you can check, monitor, backlighting, inverter, the mechanism that controls the on/off when the Laptop lid is opened and closed, take a look at this video, it may help you troubleshoot the issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Yi6GNFcP3w

Some programs need a substantial amount of RAM and in case of computers with smaller RAM, they tend to freeze. Either close some of the running programs or increase the RAM capacity. In every likelihood it should work.

How can I increase RAM in my compaq nc8230?

To increase the physical RAM then you need to consult the manufacturer of the computer. If you want to increase the virtual memory of the computer then you can very well do that. To do that you need to tell us which operating system are you using?

I have increase the ram from 512 to 2 gb in my emachine desktop, after i restart moniter not getting the video signal. how to fix it?

OK when you increased the ram from 512 to 2G, your hands usually bump the video card and loosen the connection... Crack open your PC again and re seat the video card... This is all pertaining if you have a separate video card in that computer. Just unplug the video card and re snap it in.

Keeps freezing, but works in safe mode, increase RAM?

If you've only got 384mb of RAM then yes an increase would definitely help. You're probably running with close to the bare minimum of RAM. If you're machine (and budget) can handle it, go for 1 Gig at least.
