AGITATOR ON WASHING MACHINE NOT WORKING

Most washers have lid activated switch that if you open the lid the machine will not spin. Its a safety feature. That lid switch could be bad causing your problem. Agitation will still work on older machines.

There are a couple of different reasons that this problem happnes on these machines i have this listed below please feel free to leave me a comment on any of these if you need help trying to figure out how to inspect them or test them ok but you will need a multimeter to do most of the testing.
Lid switch If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Motor coupler Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it. Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.) i will continue in the next post

Check your agitator dogs. They are probably bad here is a link to the parts.

Whirlpool top load machines have a coupling beyween the motor and the gearbox..This coupling can fail with age or if the machine is overloaded. The pump should still work even if the coupling is broken..If this is the case then it's not a big job...You need a tech who knows the tricks, and it won't take long to fix....Good luck....Nomess

Assuming that this is a basic Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain washer, the agitator is supposed to stop during the spin cycle.

Please see the following Whirlpool installation and service manual for top load machines.

If you look at the description of how the transmission works, there is an "Agitate Cam" that lifts the "Agitate Gear" out of contact with the main "Agitate Rack" when the machine goes into spin mode

I have found though that because of the friction between the agitate gear and main drive shaft, including the oil itself, the agitator may move while in spin mode.

Please do the following checks for they might just help.

Check that the water supply valves are turned on
Inspect the filter screens
Test for overheating
Inspect the water pump
Test the water inlet valve
Test the motor

Most probably this case may be due to a faulty motor.Good luck.

check the direct drive coupling between the motor and the transmission

You need to replace little gears called agitator dogs. Once agitator is removed pull top half of it off. Exposes the dog carrier.
