Was the belt shredded ( normal wear & tear ) or burnt through which could be a drum bearing or support problem .What does the drum feel like when you turn it by hand is it grinding & lump ? The fact that the motor runs with no load could by the start device faulty these are reasonably cheap to replace this is the small cylinder attached to the side of the motor with two wire connections . if your motor has not got one of these then its the start windings in the motor
It is not the trany it sounds like you need to get your tub seal and bearing kit installed. The trany is fine it can get costly if you get a person who does not know how to fix properly good luck:)
