SOLUTION
Download the attached file(s). You will probably just need the 24-pin PPD, but I have also included the 9-pin PPD (which I haven't tested) just in case.
Browse to the CUPS web interface at http: // localhost:631
NOTE: The printer installer system from the GUI will NOT work. It will throw an error and promptly fail
Create the printer listing using the CUPS web interface, and when it asks for a PPD, point it at the one you just downloaded
PROFIT!!
I hope this helps someone, ANYONE who has been in the same straits I have been.
So man your chips, and may The Source be with you!
I just copied the .gz (don't extract the ppd) file to /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/Epson/ (not sure where else I can put it).
Goto System->Administration->Printing and add a new printer. I have connected the printer with one of those cheap USB to Parallel cables. The printer is detected as EPSON LQ-300+
Select driver under Epson and you should see it listed as LQ-300+ 24 pin.
CAUTION!: The max resolution you can use under "Printer Options" is 360x180dpi. DO NOT select the highest 360dpi setting - your printer will go crazy and eat-up all your paper.
Macs don't use drivers, but rather .ppd files. you should be able to download the PPD from brothers website:
http://www.openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=hl7x0&printer=Brother-HL-730&show=0
(Direct Download Link)
When you are in system settings, goto printers, select the network printer, and when you get to choose the PPD from the pulldown menu choose "Other" and you should be able to browse to the PPD you downloaded.
you are using a UNIX based system. The Linux PPD should work just fine.
Go to the menu settings on the machine itself. Cycle through the options until you find the network settings. Make sure the device has network on and set the connection to DHCP on. save or back out and then restart the machine. It could also be a problem with your Cisco switch and the IP address ranges that the printer and switch have. You may need to specify an address in the printer settings to allow access through the Cisco switch.
