This is an old pc which was coverd in dial up connections and infested with BT/Yahoo broadband connections, so i cleared it all down. However, when i then plugged in my RJ45 network cable it wont go online. So i got a usb-ethernet adaptor and it does go online, but then stops working and the fault is so intermittant there is no pattern to it. We do not have wireless in our office, we have another 2 machines, we all plug into a hub which is then connected to our broadband line.... have looked all over the web for a driver download for the asus motherboard (needless to say previous user has lost motherboard disk!).... help!

BT provide (and own) the telephone line infrastructure for this country, and all providers go through this infrastructure. Some exchanges have proprietary equipment in them belonging to one or other of the various providers which allows them to offer something that BT may not, ut they still have to use the BT lines, which they rent from BT Wholesale division. So if BT won't let them use the lines you are in trouble when it comes to getting Broadband other than BT.
There are options however, firstly try PlusNet, as I believe they are part of BT so may get better treatment than other providers. Secondly there is Satellite Broadband but this can be expensive, especially installation when compared with over the phone. Thirdly mobile 3g or 4g broadband if you have coverage in your area, but speeds are highly reception dependant and if you don't get good mobile phone signals then this option is unlikely to work. Also you would probably have to buy and install a 3g/4g modem router and I'm not dure how expensive these are.
This may not have been a lot of help, except possibly understanding the problem !!
BT had 2 different accounts---BT Yahoo Mail and BT Mail
They are being merged to just BT Mail. You Have more
Than likely been removed. Suggest you set up your own account
with Yahoo or Google and reconstruct your contact list.
That way when you change service providers keep your own E-Mail account. Don't use the service providers account.
if connecting with use of a modem, the problem may be corrected by recycling the power. turn off PC, unplug modem from power source, wait 2 minutes. check all connections. plug in modem first and let it power up all the way, then power up pc
Being the main BT account holder, yesterday I found that each time I try to gain access to my Yarhoo Mail the screen goes blank with the words "Server hang up". Other users of this property broad band phone number are still able to connect to their Yarhoo Mail. Even from different computers at different locations the same thing occurs on my email address. My husband has given me his email address below, so I can hopefully see your reply via his laptop.
You say you dont have a modem....but you want to connect via dial up?
Well ok, you need to do the following:
1. Contact an ISP (people like Virgin, Tiscali, TalkTalk, etc etc etc) 2. Sign up for the package you want. 3. They will send you a modem. It wont be for dial up but broadband. 4. Connect it and off you go.
However, if you REALLY want to use the internet using dial up you will have to go find an old cheap dial up modem. BT, Tiscali and a few others do let you use a pay per min rate for dial up, but their is no one I know of that lets you get on line for nothing at all.
The only other service I have heared of was here: http://www.connect4free.co.uk/ And even they charge 1p per min.
So if I were you.... go broadband as its faster and in the long run, cheaper.
If this has helped you please rate it so that I know.
it does not matter. You got the wrong idea here.Broadband connection is a faster connection than dial up.If you have an internet connection then it means you can have any kind of email address, whether it be yahoo or hotmail or googlemail etc..
