If you use a flashlight, can you make out the image on your display? Also, in some cases you can tap the hinge switch (that turns the monitor off when you close the laptop) and it will come back on. If so, either your inverter or backlight is out on your screen. Inverters are inexpensive (about $25 +/-) and easy to change, backlights/cathodes are cheap, but not easy to change; delicate soldering required in most cases. If it's the backlight, just go on ebay and buy the whole screen for about $50. Or, if you can't test your inverter, just buy another screen anyway, with the inverter intact, then it doesn't matter what the problem is ;~)
If you can not see anything, then it may be your inverter (Replacement part cost is around $50.00), if you can see a dark image then your CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) is out. (Replacement part cost is around $15.00)

Vertical lines down the screen is a memory problem wiht the graphics card/chip. the screen goign red then off after a few seconds is most probably the screen inverter or possibly the backlight to the screen dying.
The graphics card is broken.
PROBABLY WORTH THE COST OF THE GRAPHICS CARD.

I have an HP pavillion zv5000 and it's just started doing the same thing. Thank goodness I have an external monitor or my laptop would be useless right now. Currently, the display will stay on for a little bit, then go black (with VERY faint outlines of what's on the screen). I can get it to come back by messing with some appearance stuff but it comes on red then after a few seconds goes black. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have a HP zv5000 and have the same problem. It worked fine one day and then the next the screen was not bright. I can barely see Windows when it boots. If I hold a flashlight off to the side of the screen I can just barely see some text.
I have the same problem. While working, the screen blacks out. If I hold a flashlight to the screen I can see faintly what I am doing. This is very annoying. I too had to connect an external monitor to my laptop. I have the Pavilion zx5000.
Hello all, I had the same problem. It starts with fine lines on the screen running verticlly, some days ago. I shut down the PC and start again. This works for two times. Now the only thing I can do is PUT ON on PUT OFF - the screen is black. Had meanwhile anyone an idea whats the problem with the screen or the graphic card??? Is it usefull to change this? Service cost are 430,--€ anyway? please let me know if you get further, Vera
Same problem for me but tried a different monitor with no luck... Can just barely see the data on the screen
i have the same problem with my hp pavilion zv5000. the monitor goes dark. i'm using the laptop with another monitor. when the sun is shining on the monitor you can see windows working fine. also, if i push the monitor close switch the monitor will come on for a few seconds, looking perfectly ok, and then goes back to being dark. is this the inverter board?
