I have two Sharper Image Ionic Quadra Breezes that I have had less than one year. Both units are cleaned regularly and started to make hissing noises. I cleaned them both as described which immediately fixed the problem with one of them. However the other unit continued to make noise and began to arc inside for approx 1/2 a minute and the become quiet only to arc again 10-15 minutes later. I the cleaned it throughly with compressed air ect. Unit was working ok for one day and now arcs every 10 minutes. This unit is off and I miss it. Any suggestions? There is no water inside, and as far as I can tell, it is clean and undamaged.
I have a sharper image ionic breeze hybrid gp that ran fine for years unitl it recently started sparking / arcing at the base of the grid blades and always in the same spot. I cleaned it several times but the sparking always came back and the unit went into either "drying grid" or "attention required" mode. The solution I found was to stand the removable grid in 2 inches of Pine-Sol cleaner 50/50 diluted with water for 24 hours then brush again with the cleaning brush and hot water. Presto! No more sparking.
*EASY ELECTRICAL TAPE FIX* If you're still hearing the crackles and sizzles after cleaning; turn the lights off, run the unit, and then observe the front, looking for any electricity arcing. It looks like thin blue bolts of electricity. Note where you see the arcing...most likely it'll be emanating somewhere from the two gray columns that sit between the blades. Remove the blades and housing to inspect the columns. The area creating the spark probably looks scorched, cracked, or as in my case - a pin-sized hole. All you have to do is patch these areas of the column with a small single-layered patch of electrical tape. Just enough to cover the damaged area. Press it down firmly and smoothly to the surface. You can find electrical tape just about anywhere, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, etc. Once I covered the areas that were sparking, the purifier worked perfectly - and silently. :-)
My ionic breeze was doing the same thing. it got worse the nore i cleaned the collection grid as well. i taped a sanding sponge to a cleaning rod and ran it up and down the corona wires-no more arcing after that. before the corona wires would only glow in certain areas(the areas they would arc from) but after cleaning the entire wire glows purple.
