You are experiencing what I believe is the dreaded Disc Read Error. This can be solved by opening the unit and thoroughly cleaning the inside from hair, Dust, lent. Clean the laser with a q-tip lightly soaked with Rubbing alcohol. Close it up and try it. Chance are you fixed it. if your problem is more severe, please check out www.playstationclinic.com

hello. maybe the blue laser that play the ps3 games and bluray disc might be broken. if your ps3 plays ps2 games and dvds, then im afraid you have to replace your broken laser of your ps3. you can also try reformatting your drive. hope this helps. goodluck!

Blue colored disks are the hardest for your ps2 to read, there is an adjustment to try to improve this, but it requires opening your console and digging into the DVD drive. Most people don't bother with it unless it won't play other disks. Here is a link to instructions:

Please check the region code on the BD or DVD. It should match the region code set in the system. Otherwise the disc will not play

Ps2 wont read discs and asks for format disc
I can guess that the games you are trying to play have a Blue underneath and not silver. This was a big problem with my sons disks too using the older version of the ps2. We managed to mess about with some of the settings and changed the rgb setting to the other option (can't remember what that was now...sorry) and got some of them to work, but not for long. When the new games come out now they expect you to have the slimline ps2 and unfortunalty won't work on the older model. So to fix this problem I just bought a new one.

What you're seeing is the menu. You need to put the disc in the console, or the disc is dirty and will not play, so it then automatically goes to the menu.
