Windows XP stopped recognizing external USB Drives

My Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 no longer recognizes my external USB hard drives.
I strongly suspect that Service Pack 3 may have something to do with it, but there are no "fixes" posted for this issue, so perhaps it is something else.
I tried swapping cables with known good ones.
I tried booting with the drives already turned on and connected.
I tried connecting the turned on drives after booting.
I tried turning on the already connected drives after booting.
I tried turning the connected drives off then on again.

None of the above have had any effect.

Do you have any suggestions?

There is a Windows fix for this. Windows offers a manual registry step by step instruction but here is their Automatic Fix it. Good luck and hope this solves your problem. Take Care!

HP xw 4400 will not recognize my hard drive when trying to install OS Windows XP Prof.

Windows XP had a hard time recognizing hard drives larger than 127 GB. The best solution is to install Windows XP with service pack 2 or 3 already slipstreamed. Otherwise, you are going to have to partition your hard drive with at least 1 partition of 127 GB or smaller.

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

Try reseating the cables on the drive and reconnect the drive to a different usb port on the pc. Also try using a different usb cable. if neither situation solves your problem, then most likely, the hard drive has gone bad.

My SimpleTech 320GB external hard drive is no longer recognized

trying using it on another system and and see if it happens like that. if it does, you may want to get a driver for the hard drive. it is likely the driver is corrupted. try it on another port also.

USB External hard drive 160 GB not recognized by desktop Windows XP OS

Very possible your problem is that this drive is not externally powered and your desktop does not put out enough power to drive it.  I'm guessing your desktop is older.  Especially if your desktop is USB 1.0 this problem would occur.  Your best bet in this case is to either mount a newer USB expansion card into your desktop, or get another externally powered harddrive and transfer data over to it from this one with your laptop.
