A friend gave me an optical tape measure ranging 600, I've never used one and don't understand quite what it's for or how. Not sure if it's for surveying or how to even go about using it.

It's for general purpose measurements. Usually, point it at a wall and press the measure button. It will indicate the distance from where you're standing to the wall. With a little practice, you'll be an expert and won't need to use a tape measure for the longer distances.

these tape cartridges are very slow to read & write. if u r reading a set of data & need to go back for certain data u have to rewind & wait & watch until that data area arrives. it takes a lot of time. in order to save time u need optical disk drives & dvds to backup your data. u can also ask them to convert your tape cartridge data into optical disks.

What indicates the black arrow mark in 16inches,32inches,64inches in steel measuring tape

Typical framing is laid out on 16 inch centers. Example: the studs in a framed wall are 16 inches apart which gives the required strength and allows drywall to break at a stud when it is installed. Drywall sheets are 8 foot or 12 foot, if the framing is on 16 inch centers then the drywall will end at a stud. The tape measure is highlighted at multiples of 16 inches to make it easy to mark the studs when laying out the framing.

How to read steel tape?

Not enough info, a steel ruler could be in 64's of an inch, a steel tape measure is usually in 16's of an inch but some are in 32's of an inch until you get past the 12" mark.

Measuring Accuracy Problem

Use a second measuring tool and compare the results, or you can measure a known size or length (floor tiles for example)and check the reading you get.
