You need a USB-SATA box not USB-IDE

SOURCE: My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive.

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

SOURCE: My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive.

I had the same issue. Its not a power issue because it shows up in device manager. Heres what I did.

Right-click on my computer and click Manage>Disk Management

Your drive should show up there. Right-click on it. If explore is not grayed out, assign a drive letter to it and you should then be bale to see it in my computer.

In my case explore was grayed out. I had to click on the option to format the drive. After re-formatting the passport explore was available. I then assigned a drive letter to it and I have access again.

I guess somehow using it on multiple computers srcewed up the file-system on it. I was using it between windows and linux.

This fixed my problem.

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.

SOURCE: external hdd not detected in my computer but is in device manager

You probably still need to partition it, before you can even format it.
Try the disk manager in Windows.

In the start menu, right-click "My Computer" and in the popup menu, select "Manage".
One computer management comes up, select disk management and there you should see the disk. You can then create a partition and format it.

I have one hitachi deskstar 1 tb hdd it has important data, and its not detecting is there any way i can get back those data. please hepl

There are some tests that can help you determine the gravity of the problem, or at least the cost of getting the data back.

- First, try on an other computer where you are sure that the USB ports are correctly working.
- An other option is to try on the same computer but with an other USB disk.

If nothing happen, this is likely that either
1. The USB adapter or the power supply from the external drive is dead.
2. The electronic part of the disk is dead.
3. The mechanical part of the disk is dead.

To eliminate the reason 1 from being the problem, remove the disk from the box, this is probably an SATA disk or eventually an IDE disk. You can connect the disk directly in your computer, or if you're not comfortable with that, you can buy an external adapter like this one :
http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B001OORMVQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1310226408&sr=8-2

You can also check if you hear the disk spinning up when you power the box in a silent room. This is likely to eliminate the reason nr 3.

If only the reason nr 2 remains, you can try to find on ebay or other online reseller the EXACT same model of disk by looking the product nr and/or model nr on the disk itself, and replace the electronic board. ( there are some small torx screws and connectors... should be easy.) This should cost you between 100€ and 200€.

The very last chance, also the most expensive, is to contact a specialized hard disk recovery service. This is the easiest as they will do the same procedure as described, but they will go far more in detail, and could go up to replace mechanical parts.. You must count between 400€ and 800€ to get back your data.

Hope it's clear.

Fran?ois.

Him I need to recover data from an Hitach Travelstar HDD N155 ? Is it a SATA ? Do I need to connect it to a pc as a slave using a cable ? Which kind of cable ?

This drive is an IDE type and not SATA, which means you will need an adapter like this one so you can plug a data cable and provide power. You can then connect the drive to a regular desktop PC.

You can set the jumper on the drive to make it a slave and hook it up on the same IDE cable as your primary hard drive, but the jumpers on the laptop drives are teeny little ones and I personally find them hard to deal with. What I do is unplug the data cable to the optical drives which are on the second IDE channel, then plug the laptop drive cable there. Then the drive can remain jumpered as master.

Another option is not to bother opening the PC at all, but to get an external hard drive case like this. Then you could just plug the drive in on a USB port and copy your data, and you'd have an external drive available for future use.

Good luck with the recovery, and thanks for using Fixya!

Hi! I am trying to fire up a Toshiba 2590X and think the on switch is to the right of the Windows button on the top row, right hand side, but nothing happens. The power green and orange lights are on. Help...

Remove the battery and see if it starts up fine, if not then try the following:

1. Unplug your charger cord.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Press and hold the "Power" button for 30 seconds or longer
4. Now plug back in the power/charger cord.
5. Now put the battery back in.
6. See if it starts up now, laptops often get stuck in hibernate mode.

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

Connected IDE Drive does not mount on desktop

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.
