Question about Acer TravelMate 2300 Notebook

Acer TravelMate Notebook 4502LMi DVDRW SOSW-852S (PRS9) Replacement

I have an Acer TravelMate Notebook 4502LMi with an internal Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S(PRS9) burner which is needing to be replaced, as it's mostly on the fritz not reading any DVD/CD. Writing either also becomes a hit and miss, often wasting multiple discs.

My question is what would be the best replacement(s) for the least amount of $$$, and any thing needing to be swapped from one to another, or watch out for gotchas, etc?

I did find a recommendation of a Panasonic UJ-845-B 8X Slim DVD Drive (186-117) for $79.99, but I've found other sites not recommending this drive.

Your thoughts would certainly be appreciated.

Best Regards,

John Gerdes

    Hi, I also have Acer TravelMate Notebook 4502LMi with an internal Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S(PRS7). My problem is that it can read and write DVD but can't perform the same with CD. As I read on forums, a lot of people have these or similar kind of problem with this type of CD/DVDRW and they can't resolve it. I sent an e-mail to Acer support asking for help but got no answer. My conclusion is that the best thing is to by some replacement so I'm interested in recommendation. Is this mentioned Panasonic UJ-845-B 8X Slim DVD Drive (186-117) good solution or is there some better option? Price is not so important, the quality and compatibility with this type of laptop is at first place.

    Thanks in advance, Zoran Bundalo.

    I have an ACER Travelmate 4001 with slimtype DVDRW SOSw-852S as DVD/CD reader/burner.

    It wroks fine p to 6 months then I had problems burning DVD, then reading DVDs and now I can't read or burn any DVD/CDs anymore.

    When I try to read a simple CD I hear a noise like the drive trying to start but it does not succeed in starting and after 3 or 4 retries the drive stops.

    I am afraid I have to replace the components but Where can I find one ?

My recommendation is to get the exact replacement that Acer recommend. OR a third party equivalent.

In saying that as long as one has a warranty for said device, then really anything else is a moot point.

I think you will find that the Panasonic drive will be more than suitable.

The Acer Travelmate 4502LMi Notebook PC is one of the TravelMate 4500 series of Notebook PC's.

This is Acer Support > TravelMate 4500 series of Notebook PC's manual download page,

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/0000/Acer/TravelMate4500/TravelMate4500ul.shtml

Left-click on -
TravelMate 2300 Users Guide.
It is for the TravelMate 2300, 4000, and 4500 series of Notebook PC's, and is in English.

[This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it which uses PDF files.
I would recommend however, upgrading to Adobe Reader X (10), if the computer you are using does not have it.

It may take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page, and additional time to fully download the file. There is a way to save this PDF document to your computer. This way you can burn it to a CD disk for safekeeping, and delete it from the computer to save harddrive space.

If you do not know how, and wish to, please post in a Comment ]

At the top of the PDF file is the page number box. It is to the left of the blue Down Arrow.
Go to Page 23.

[You can use the blue Down Arrow to go to Page 23, or

1) Put your mouse cursor in the page number box. Left-click once
2) Type 23
3) Press the Enter key ]

Slimtype dvd rw sosw-852s

Try This:

1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
7) Reboot your computer
8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone

Slimtype dvdrw SOSW-852s jumpy when playing CDs. Shows CD with photographs ok.

Hi - I would suggest that buy a cleaner for the drive, and try playing you cd's afterwords. If it still playing up then copy some music from the computer onto a brand new cd and play back. If that still has the same fault then you may need to but a new drive.

I hope that helps you.

Please let me know how you get on.

CD DVD RW NOT BEING SEEN IN MY COMPUTER

Hi,
Sorry I can't offer any help, but then again, even Liteon couldn't help and posted a notice on their website a while back stating that these units were subject to drive failure.

" DVD-RW Drive SOSW-852S
NOTE: This is a system integrator product. Due to compatibility concerns, which may cause drive failure, we are not able to provide any firmware upgrade for this product. For technical support, kindly contact your vendor."

sounds like you're suffering the jungle DVD fever disease, most likely from excess salt air exposure(same thing happens over here on Hawaiian islands). So, just swap out the DVD for another one, and mark your calendar for same drill in another year.

got backup for your computer?
