I have a wireless router for my home. My computer connects wirelessly without problem. the xbox360 is connected directly to the router, i.e. NOT wirelessly (LAN). The console will not find a connection if the WAN on the router is password protected. When I test the network settings it seems to fail a different test each time. If I leave the network unprotected then the xbox has no problem connecting to xbox live. How can I fix this so that I can use xboxlive and still have a protected wireless network?

Re: cant connect to xbox live through router
Hey stchivo, not entirely sure what's happening. It might help to know what type of router you have. I know the new linksys routers have a new security feature by the name of SES or something of the sort. Make sure that is disabled and that DHCP is enabled. Also make sure a firewall on the router isn't blocking it. It might help to have screenshots of your router settings to better evaluate what's happening.

You need to forward these ports on both your router, and computer aswell as firewall you got one of those.
Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP)
You might aswell need to open 1863 (UDP and TCP) if you want to use video chat for the kinect. Listed ports need to be forwarded when connecting to XBOX Live A more detailed guide to setting it up is available here: http://support.xbox.com/en-us/xbox-360/networking/network-ports-used-xbox-live
I assume the wireless router is configured correctly and the PC can connect to the wireless router and the Internet.
The problem could be that the signal is too weak upstairs for the XBox especially if you have a concrete floor between the XBox and the wireless router. Try moving the wireless router around to increase signal strength to the CBox.
The other problem could be the XBox is not configured correctly.
Follow these instructions to configure the XBox.
In the Xbox Dashboard, go to My Xbox and open System Settings.
Select Network Settings, Configure Network.
On the Basic Settings tab, select your wireless settings.
Select the name (SSID) of your wireless network. If your router isn't broadcasting your network's name, select Specify Unlisted Network and enter the name.
If your network has wireless security, enter your WEP or WPA key.
i had this exact problem. the reason mine wasn't working was because the security settings for my wireless router were set on wp2a and the xbox 360 can't pick this up. change your wireless router security to wpa and you should be fine...after i did this it saw my network and i was fine
