Question about Lexmark X5470 All-In-One InkJet Printer
I just bought this new Lexmark after my last one died. I can send faxes, but not receive them. The machine will ring, but not receive the fax. Auto Answer is on, and it is in Fax Mode. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting, etc. and I get the same thing. Any suggestions??
Had similar problem, when pressing start button printer always scans and sends a fax even if there is no documents!. also, even if fax tone comes first from the sender it will insist to send.
i used *9* combo in my attached phone and waited until reception started but it never started like if it hadn't heard the tones.
but if you dial that same combo using the fax's dial it works! all you have to do is stay on the line until it says "receiving".
haven't found another way, yet.

It sounds like maybe the printer is not picking up the incoming call. Check to see that the printer is the first thing connected to the phone jack. If you have DSL you will need to plug the printer into the "phone" side of the DSL filters that you have on all your phone jacks.
If you have an answering machine it should be plugged into the printer's phone jack - not the other way around. The printer is smart enough to pick up fax calls and pass voice calls on to the answering machine if you get it hooked up right. Check the user's guide for more specifics.

Tips for a great answer:
To make sure the printer picks up
incoming faxes, set Auto Answer to On, and then set the printer to pick up
after a greater number of rings than the answering machine. For example, if the
answering machine picks up calls after four rings, then set the printer to pick
up after six rings. This way, the answering machine picks up calls first and
your voice calls are received. If the call is a fax, then the printer detects
the fax signal on the line and takes over the call.
If you have a voicemail feature associated in the same line as your fax:
Voice mail and fax can share the
same telephone line if you subscribe to a distinctive ring service offered by
your telephone company. This feature allows you to have multiple telephone
numbers on one telephone line. Each telephone number has a designated ring
pattern (single ring, double ring, triple ring, or double and triple ring). The
different ring patterns let you know which telephone number was dialed, and
which device you should use to answer the call.
If you do not have distinctive ring service, then set the printer to receive faxes manually (Auto Answer Off). This setting lets you receive both voice calls and fax calls, but works best if you use voice mail more often. You need to turn off voice mail whenever you are expecting a fax.
