Question about Moen & Replacement Cartridge

Can't get phillips screw to loosen on moen 87739 single handle lever

I am trying to replace the 1225 cartridge on a Moen monticello single lever faucet. I've removed the lever, but can't seem to remove the inner workings to get at the cartridge. It turns but doesn't seem to loosen no matter how long I turn.

It was a phillips screw. I was finally able to wrestle it off using a flathead screwdriver to force the head upward, a screwdriver to turn, and a needle nose pliers to hold the cartridge it was screwed into still while turning. I believe the screw had become crossthreaded and was somehow turning the broken cartridge rather than coming out. Able to complete the repair so all good now. Thank you.

hi... yes that's a very common issue with moen "cartridges" -- it's very simple to fix..... grasp the handle and give it a gentle tug upwards when the water is on... if it retracts again, pull the handle out again and tug again but this time a bit harder. Not sure what causes this on new cartridges but it will fix your issue.

Should be coming out if head not stripped or threads inside at set screw aren't stripped. Can you tell at all with perhaps flashlight if set screw is turning at all? Look like it backing out?

Moen makes a stem removal tool that angages the 2 ears on the outer portion of the stem. You can order from Moen:

Or your local home center or hardware store should have one in stock if they carry Moen parts.

I need replacement part for bath sink cartridge 4570

The Moen 1225 or 1200 cartridges are the same except the 1200 is brass in stead of plastic. They will fit most Moen single handle faucets. If it is a two-handle faucet, the 1224 cartridge will fit most two-handle models unless it is a fancy widespread faucet more than about 15 years old. I don't know the model numbers for those cartridges. All of these cartridges require a removal tool if you can't get them out with a pair of pliers.

No Hot water coming out when single handle on hot water side.Cold water comes out fine. Water in the lines leading to the taps, but no hot water coming out. This is a bathroom faucet Moen single handle.

Cartridge removal is a simple matter of exposing and pulling out the old cartridge. Before getting started, turn off both water valves underneath the sink and allow the water to run until the line is clear. Using a screwdriver, gently pry off the cap on the lever of the faucet handle to expose the cartridge. Remove the U-shaped retaining clip that holds the cartridge in place and pull the cartridge out. If dirt or residue makes removal difficult, use a Moen cartridge puller to assist you. A cartridge puller fits over the cartridge and gives you greater pulling power.

Soak the dirty cartridge in vinegar for four hours and replace.

If cleaning the cartridge does not work, call the Moen Helpline at 1-800-465-6636 or Customer Service at 1-800-465-6130 to order a free replacement. Locate the part number on the cover page of your instruction manual. If you no longer have the manual, look on the underside of the spout.

Moen Monticello 4-inch centerset bath faucets can be repair easily with only a screwdriver and adjustable wrench. Turn the water off to the both sides of the faucets under the sink. Open both the hot and cold-water valves to alleviate any remaining pressure. Remove the handles by grasping the base of the handle and turning it counterclockwise.( This works for both lever and cross handles). Loosen the Moen faucet cartridge bonnet nut with an adjustable wrench by turning it counterclockwise to the left. Pull the stem from the faucet by hand and replace. Reinstall the bonnet nuts and handles. Turn the water back on and test the faucet for leaks. The Moen Monticello faucet comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Try calling Moen to get your replacement parts free.
