I need to know what your source signal is; i.e. antenna, cable/satellite, modem, etc.

Hello
Connect the TV to external antenna or cable and do the following ot autoscan channels. If it autoscans, and doesn't store any stations in its memory, the memory IC has damaged and should be replaced with same type and number. Wait till autoscan completes and see whether the first channel receve will comes displayed or not. It will take some time to complete. the procedure is:

From Menu Press Vol [+/-] then Channel [UP/DOWN] buttons to find CHANNEL AUTOSCAN.
Press Volume [+/-] button, channels will be scaned automatically. OK

My set top box will no longer pick up certain channels such as itv and channel 4 stations !!

My set top box has setup menu, channels, autoscan to scan for channels. They changed some of the channels here after the original switch to digital, and a fresh autoscan was needed to again find the channels that moved. See if your box has autoscan for channels, and do it.

My scanner always stops on channels that are not doing anything.

The way this works is the radio autoscans across the bandwidth of your radio model and stops at the highest levels that break the squelch you have set. Some of the more expensive models will let you "skip" certain frequencies(channels) but none will let you add them. You can turn your squelch level up and down and this will recieve more or less frequencies within that radios range. Hope this helps.
