Hi Roxanne
Sounds as though the power-supply might be faulty. As you turn up the volume more power is required from the supply and it's not delivering - hence the light fading.

Hope this info helps please let me know if you need any further info
Here are some things to check for:
-Is the power on? There will be a light on the speakers that show it has power.
-Is the audio cable plugged in to the right spot? Most likely, the cable will need to be plugged in to a green colored jack on the back of your computer.
-Make sure the volume is turned up -- it's the knob on the speaker that you turn.
Try going to "control panel", then "sounds and audio devices" (in XP, should be the same in newer OS's). Click on the "advanced" button under Device Volume. That brings you to "volume control". Make sure the levels are up and the device is not muted.
Is the red light flashing at first?
The unit may be going into protect mode. Lets hope it has done the job and the receiver has protected itself from failure. Protect mode can result from speaker wires touching each other or the Amps metal case. Check that first. It can also be caused by unstable ohm loads if too many speakers are connected to any of the outputs especially zone 2. If you can remove all speaker wires and turn the unit back on. If it stays on, turn the volume down on the main zone and zone 2 if connected. Then reconnect speaker wires.
1. Check the light if it is lit on the speaker.
2. If you do not see any light lit on speaker, try to turn it on.
3. Check the speaker setup and connectivity.
4. Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control
it isnt getting enough power and its tripping the internal switch on the amp and putting it in safe mode. either your wire isnt a high enough gauge. you might need a capacitor or you need bigger wire.
When I did this truck I had to go to the amp under the center console. Good luck
