Following on from the last post, we'll now look at how to replace the handwheel, or if you like the balance wheel, which is a process that ...
..
When winding a bobbin, the machine's needle action is deactivated. One must deactivate the bobbin winding mechanism when ready to sew. Your owner's manual should have instructions for how to do this. On most machines, it is the inner knob on the handwheel that needs to be tightened. But since we have no information for your machine, we are limited in ability to assist.
the only time the handwheel needs to be touched is if the sewing machine uses a clutch (to be unwound to wind a bobbin & then tighten back up before sewing) in the handwheel to work the bobbin winder. the instruction manual will tell that.
If there is a knob in the center of the handwheel, it needs to be loosened.
Take the thread from the spool around the first guide and then to toward the bobbin winder.
Run the end of the thread through an opening in the side of the bobbin spool.
Hold onto about 5" of the thread and place the bobbin spool onto the bobbin pin and move the pin to the right or the winding wheel to the left (depends on how your machine is designed).
Holding onto the thread end, press the power pedal.
When you cannot hold onto the thread any longer, stop the machine and cut off the thread end and then continue to wind the bobbin.
Disengage the bobbin winder (move the pin or the wheel back into place) and tighten the knob in the center of the handwheel before sewing.
If the Handwheel (big knob) is moving but the needle is not moving, you need to engage the clutch ........depending on the model
- push handwheel in to engage, pull out to disengage
or
- if there is a smaller wheel inside the handwheel, tighten to engage, loosen to release.
BUT if all is jammed........
Check for threads that are jamming the motion of the hook around where the bobbin case is
If your bobbin goes in from the top, remove the needleplate and bobbincase remove thread jams by gently rocking handwheel back and forth until released.
Clean around the hook race with a rag moistened with methylated spirit, surgical spirit or similar, then reassemble.
If front loading, open the door for bobbin case area, release 2 retaining clips holding the collar on (take note of the position/orientation for when you re-assemble....even take a digi photo to refer to !?!).....
......then just do jam removal & clean out in much the same way as for the top loader.
In all cases, don't force too much or be too brutal, gentle and patient works best, try to judge where the jam is caught and work with it slowly......you may need to cut jammed threads, just ensure all are removed before you re-assemble.
