Intermittent cable or modem problem

Intermittent signal problems from cable(?) over many months on Time Warner network. Got new SB5101u cable modem - did not solve problem. Area TW service always seems good per their tech support. Cable tests good from pole to house. No splitter involved. No box in house-cable is direct to modem. Modem logs show errors R0055.0, R004.0, M573.0, M571.1, R002.0, R001.0, etc. Many techs visiting over time find no problem.

Check the connectors on the in-house cable, if they can move in their sockets slightly, they may become intemittent as temp and humidity changes. If you can replace the cable with a new one of a known brand. If not try pushing cable plugs all the way into each socket and surrounding the plug with Blu-Tak to stop any slight movement. If this does not work, check or replace the power supply for the modem, it may be occasionally dropping its voltage, due to other power demands within your house. A good quality power supply will keep a stable voltage for your modem.

SOURCE: loss of internet connection

Sounds like a switch before the signal gets to your house. Modems usually don't go out intermittently unless they are overheating. Is the modem in a ventilated area where it can get some air? An alternate is to borrow a modem from a friend to test it. Usually one of your niehbors will have the same service and the same modem. I had my surfboard (from comcast) for 5 years and it was solid as a rock, the spotty services was always at the Comcast switches (at the street or the nearest hub.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: Dear forum-freinds,

Hi,
If you say the lights are going out on the modem when it boots you off the network then the problem is your modem and not your internet connection, if the modem is new take it back and have them swap it for another one.

Regards.

SOURCE: Modem won't work thru splitter

actually modem will only send and recive signal through direct cable feed it will not work by spillter, but dont worry there is device avalible in the market which will help you to connect the modem directly and also act as a spillter too better go the shop from where you brought this modem and describe your needs they will help you.

I cannot get internet on my laptop from an open access point with Time Warner internet

Hello,

Though you are getting strong signals from the router, the router itself may not be connected to the Internet. The owner may leave the router on but power off the modem. It is possible that they may use the router for thier own private network with no connection to the Internet. When you connect to the router, check your network and sharing center to see if you see an X marked on the connection between the router and the Internet. If you do, the router is not connected to the modem.

I've recently switched to charter as my providerand they installeda modem ( sbv51220) which works fine, but the monthly charge of five dollars irks me. I bought another modem from Bestbuy at the urging of...

Do you have phone service with Charter as well? If so the modem you have been provided is made to run both the phone service and the internet. If you purchased your own modem from best buy the phone portion would not be present so that is why those connections are not on the new one.

To cut to the point the new modem will work just fine for you internet but bear in mind it will now require another splitter for the coax cable line and each time that you add a splitter you will loose a portion of the incoming signal and this may affect your services.

Thanks,
Robert

I recently purchase comcast internet and cable. I have a motorola surfboard SB5101U cable modem and when I try 2 connect my xbox to xboxlive, it says that my network doesn't have a sufficient MTU setting....

You actually should call comcast and tell them about the issue, They have a backdoor into your modem that they can troubleshoot it for you. The issue with their modems is they are usually locked with some weird password they use.

Usually with a modem or router you can dial an internal page but there system like Time Warner is set to their needs so that they can keep that back-door open.

Comcast phone number is 1-800-266-2278 or 1-800-Comcast same numbers thats just the way they word it on their site.

When i reset my modem it goes through the normal start up process but when it is trying to connect online the lights start flashing.(receive &send ) lights flash.

The light pattern you have described shows that the modem can not establish a connection to your internet service provider (ISP). This is typically do to a signal related issue. To trouble shoot the problem you will need to connect the modem directly to the main cable line where it first enters into the home. You will know when the modem establishes a connection by the top 4 lights becoming solid green. If at any point all 4 top green lights start to blink in sequence than you will need to contact your internet service provider to "unwall the modem". Remember most internet service providers require you to register new modems on there network. So if you have not all ready completed that process you will most likely not have access. If you can not get a connection from the main line than there is a issue with either the modem or the signal coming into the home and you will need to contact your internet service provider.

I hope that information above has helped is some way.
If possible please rate this solution.

All the leds are lit up but the online led keeps blinking.

This light pattern indicates that the modem can not establish a connection to your internet service provider (ISP). This is typically do to a signal related issue. To trouble shoot the problem you will need to connect the modem directly to the main cable line where it first enters into the home. This process is known as bypassing the splitters. You will know when the modem establishes a connection by the top 4 lights becoming solid green. If bypassing your splitters resolved the issue than you will need to replace the malfunctioning splitter. Typically splitter only cost a few bucks and can be purchased from any electronic store. If at any point all 4 top green lights start to blink in sequence than you will need to contact your internet service provider to "unwall the modem". Remember most internet service providers require you to register new modems on there network. So if you have not all ready completed that process you will most likely not have access. Just had a new router put in by Time Warner Cable and they synced all our computers to a MAC address. We have 4 computers on this (2 desktops) and 2 laptops. Only one is having a problem, the Dell...

I would need a few more details to really get to the heart of this but the first thing I would do is connect this Dell to the router with an actual cable, if only temporarily. See if there are still issues when directly connected. Depending on answer to that you would know if the wireless is some how responsible or if there is some other cause. If there are no issues with a direct cable I would say it is the wireless card or signal. You could a try different wireless hardware on the dell or switch channels on the wifi router to see if that helps. I can't think of a reason why four computers on the same router would respond differently to a specific site.
