Question about Kenmore 15864/15862 Top Load Washer

Kenmore washer drains but won't spin.

Hello, I have a sears kenmore model 110 20902990 washer that doesn't spin but does drain. The motor is turning but drum doesn't engage. It did smell as if something was hot or burning. Also there was some black dust (rubber) under the machine. thank you!

Have the same washer . drains but does not spin. Also makes a loud noise during the time of spin cycle. How do I repair it ? or does it have to be a professional?

Hi. I have the same washer and mine stopped spinning and had the black dust under it so I was told I should replace the motor coupler. I am in the process of doing that but the new set has a metal sleeve and it seems like it does not want to go on very easily. I'm just wondering if I should (lightly) hammer it on or not or if I should look for some new couplers without the metal sleeve. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

No smell of burned motor. It goes through the cycles and makes the noise of spinning and even discharges water but the drum doesnt spin. Everything else including rinse cycles work.

I also have Kenmore and experience the same problem, it works through the cycle fine. Then it drains. But does not spin, although i hear the motor running. Please help.

Sounds like the motor coupling has broken, fairly inexpensive part but does require some finesse to install. let me know if you decide to attempt it.

If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing.

Drain pump/filter clean, full flow when draining. Pump often runs past the point of empty, spin cycle won't start

Check door switch: If the lid switch is bad it will not drain or spin. Try this test: With lid open let it finish wash cycle. Press lid switch down with screwdriver. Washer should begin draining. Release switch. Motor should stop. Press switch a second time. Washer should start spinning as it continues to drain. If motor doesn't come on while lid switch is pressed, replace the switch. OR

your dogs may be bad in the agitater.. if u open the lid and turn the agitater back and forth does it rachet or does it turn freely both ways?

This is typically a sensor issue. If the door sensor is malfunctioning, this will cause the washer not to enter the wash cycle. The wash motor is separate from the drain motor, so this may also be a control board issue. Contact Sears, as the control boards are typically under warranty longer than other parts.

The first thing I'd try is using a different cycle. If the washer works as it should, the problem points to the timer.

I'd also check to make sure that when replacing the switch, the connections to the timer haven't come loose.

Since you've replaced the Lid Switch, the motor has power for the drain and spin cycles.

These washers use a reversing motor. The motor turns one way for agitating and reverses for the drain and spin.

Since you cannot hear anything when it is supposed to be agitating, the problem does point to the timer or motor.

My kenmore washer won't spin

I just had the same problem last week. It would not drain or spin. I called Sears and they said to drain it on my own with the shop vac and unplug it for three minutes and it should reset itself. Turns out it didn't Sears came out and told me the motor was bad and it would cost $850.00 to fix it.
