I had a straight talk phone but it torn up so i got another one off of a friend and i need to activate and transfer the number and time off my old one that tore up can you please help me

i want to switch numbers from a damaged straight talk phone to another straight talk that is inactive. do i switch the sim cards on them? the damaged phone still has minutes on it. can i carry the minutes over?
