Question about LaCie Design by F. A. Porsche 160 GB Hard Drive

Device not being detected

I have successfully input the hard drive to the PC, and although the red light appears, there is no sign of the device being detected on the PC and no alternative way for me to retrieve the documents.

    Recently aquired this device, when I plug it in, there is no way I can access the driver, Computer says its functioning properly, but I cannot access it. It doesn't show up in my computer or anything

Make sure your port cables are properly plugged. The Lacie line of drives are known to have inferior ports. You may have to switch the drive out of that enclosure...I can offer safe instructions, but I would troubleshoot with another data cable and computer.....to rule everything out between the drive and computer.

My toshiba external hard drive won't be opened


Some external storage devices work poorly or not at all when connected to a hub; try connecting the drive directly to a port on the computer. Also check if it's detected in "Disk Management". Here you can verify if the partition and format are correct for the Operating System. Check the Drive's status in Device manager. This will verify if the external drive has a drive letter designation. Check Partition and Format. Log in as Administrator account in windows or any other account with administrative privileges Insert your removable disk into the USB port. Click Start, right click on computer and select manage. Now, click Disk Management. Check whether drive letter for the device is present. Check the lower window to find whether the device is detected (such as Disk 1, Disk 2, etc). If the device is detected with a drive letter, verify that no other device is using that drive letter. If it is, change it to unused drive letter. Hope this helps.

IO error


The message "The Request Could Not Be Performed Because of an I/O Device Error" appears when Windows is unable to read the data on a storage device.


If this error message appears when attempting to access the files on an input/output

(I/O or IO) device, such as an external hard drive, the file system on the drive could be damaged, the drive could be infected with a virus or the data connector inside the device enclosure could have come loose.


If troubleshooting the drive fails to fix the IO device error, formatting the drive might repair the device.

Connect the external hard drive to the computer.


Run an antivirus program.


Click the "Scan" tab or button, then click "Custom."

Uncheck all items in the list except for the drive letter assigned to the external drive.


Click "OK." Click "Scan" or "Scan Now" to run a virus scan on the hard drive.

Quarantine or remove any infections the virus scanner detects.


Click "Start." Input "cmd.exe" into the search field.

Press "Enter" to open Command Prompt. Input "chkdsk <drive>: /f /r" into Command Prompt.


Replace "<drive>" with the letter assigned to your external hard drive.

Press "Enter" to run CheckDisk on the drive.


CheckDisk will search for and repair detected errors or bad sectors.


Burn the files on the external hard drive to a set of DVDs or move the files to another drive, if possible.

If the IO device error reappears when attempting to move the files, disconnect the external hard drive from the computer.


Remove the power adapter from the drive.

Check the documentation included with the drive for instructions to take the drive apart.


If no instructions are available, contact the manufacturer for instructions or find out if disassembling the drive will void the drive's warranty.


Remove the screws securing the faceplate to the drive or from the edge of the enclosure. Insert the edge of a small, flathead screwdriver in between either side of the enclosure to wedge both sides apart.


Check the connections to the drive.

Confirm that the IDE or SATA interface is plugged into the back of the drive.


Reassemble the external hard drive, reconnect the power adapter and reconnect the drive to the PC.


Attempt to access the files on the drive.

If the IO device error reappears, return to Command Prompt. Input "format /fs:fat32 <drive>:" into the command-line prompt.


Replace "<drive>" with the letter assigned to the external hard drive.


Press "y" when the message "Proceed with Format (Y/N)?" appears.

The process will format the drive, erasing all data on the disk.


If the drive still fails to function after format, you will need to replace the drive.

Not recognice by usb hard


A USB hard drive is a portable external storage device that works just like a conventional hard drive.

The device is simply plugged into a USB port on your computer as you would connect a flash drive.


Unlike a flash drive, however, a USB hard drive can store a much larger amount of data.


If your computer will not recognize your USB hard drive, you can try troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Plug one end of the USB cable into the port on your hard drive and plug the other end into the USB port of your computer. Ensure that both ends of the cable are connected securely.


Open "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista/7).

The USB device should be listed as "removable disk" once it is plugged into the computer.


If it is not listed among the available drives on your computer, proceed to the next step.

Ensure that the data cable is working properly.


Try another USB cable if you have one available.

Disconnect all other USB devices from the computer as they may interfere with the operating system detecting the external hard drive.

Reboot the computer if the USB hard drive is still not recognized.


Plug the USB cable into another USB port and check to see if the device is detected.

If you are using a USB hub, remove the device and plug the external hard drive directly into a USB port.


If the computer still fails to recognize the device, the external hard drive itself may be experiencing a hardware problem.


Check the status of the hard drive in the "Device Manager" window. Under Windows XP, right click "My Computer" and select "Device Manager."


For Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the "Windows" button in the lower left corner of the screen, then type "Computer Management" in the search bar and press "Enter."


Select "Device Manager" in the "Computer Management" window. In the Device Manager window, click the "+" sign that appears beside "Disk Drives."


If the external drive is not listed, click "Other Devices" in the Device Manager window and see if an "Unknown Device" appears.


The external hard drive may have been detected but the device is not working properly.

If it is still under warranty, take the device to the computer store where it was purchased to have it repaired or replaced.

Why always the RED LIGHT?


Maybe the detection circuit for the diagnostic lights is faulty, if the disk utility found no issues I would continue using the hardware.

click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working

make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

Acer Aspire cd/dvd/rw drive 'missing'


Go to device manager and look for the dvd/cd on the list. Click on the "+" sign and you may have a yellow, red or black symbol. right-click on the device and reinstall the driver. That should get it working again. If not then try the troubleshooting in the device manager, same place you reinstall the driver. Follow the instructions. If none of that works then it needs to be replaced.

I had this exact same problem

I just had mine repaired at an authorized Brother service center...It was the "Main PCB Assy". or the "main board. Total cost with tax....$100.
I'll try another brand before I buy Brother again.

What version of windows are you using, XP with SP3 should see and recognize pretty much any USB drive out there, especially a cruzer, look in control panels | system | hardware | Device Manager for anything weird going on, there should be no yellow caution signs or red X's if you see the yellow caution sign, it means you will need t update your OS or find a driver, if the device has a red X over it, right click and try to enable it.

Freecom 250 Gb Hard Drive


Hi des,
you need to install windows XP, on a different hard-drive.
even if it,s only 10 gig plus.
You can then access the drive.
Your problem is here, is that you,ve upgraded from XP to Vista, theres a possibility, that you may have lost or even formatted your freecom hard-drive.
No-Support-Device detected, is saying that your USB devices are not functioning correctly.
Check in the bios that the USB devices are enabled, to operate your hard-drive. ( this is assuming it,s a USB drive )
