This is not a problem with the tape but the camera. The only way to fix it seems to be to find an empty spot on the tape or a spot you don’t care if you record over. Then record for a second then go to video mode and you can play the tape without the blue lines. Or buy something else to play the tapes which should be fine either way. Darn camera !

Did you test the previously recorded photos, or with a recorded cassette? if it is not showing the prerecorded pictures it means there is some problem with the video head, eject the cassette look the head drum carefully, if there any dirt on the head, clean it with a head cleaner cassette.(put the cleaner cassette in and play it,it will play for 3 minutes only, rewind the cassette and ply several times). some old cassette also will not give good result, if your system too old, the head may be weak so that you have to replace it.
sounds like the record head(s) may be very dirty, check them, they should clean and shiny if dulled an brown with tape residue, you can clean them with a lint free cloth and head cleaner. tape based cleaners cassette may not be good enough if the heads are very dirty. ensure you give the heads enough time to dry after cleaning 2 mins should be good then run a test record to check them.
Hi tlaufer , According to the symptom this problem is related to the VIDEO HEAD, As you earlier try to clean the head but no results, Please open the cassette compartment of your camera (as when you insert the cassette in it) for 30 mins (remains open cassette compartment) Actueally some time due to moisture head get durt. After 30 mins insert the cassette and play it. Hope it will start work again fine. But if no result from the said procedure then there must be a damadge of point of the head, in this condition you have to replace the VIDEO HEAD assembly. Thanks for using fixya.
Dirty video head! Playback newly opened blank tape for five minutes, after that eject, reinsert, playback then eject again five times, these will serve as your video head cleaner, never use "video head cleaning cassette tape" for it will only damage your camera.
Most camera has built in video head cleaner installed inside and activates only when you insert, initial play/rec, and ejects a tape. If the problem is still there you need pro fix then.[:0)
Digital video camcorder are recording signals in very thin line (as thin as 1/8 of a hair.) Therefore, following symptoms may appear if video heads become dirty even a little.
If such symptoms appear, clean the video heads with a commercially available dry cleaning cassette.
If the symptoms reappear shortly after cleaning, the video cassette may be defective. Stop using the cassette.
Video heads may become dirty under the following conditions:
(1) When using the camcorder in humid or hot places.
(2) When using cassette with damaged or dirty tape.
(3) When using the camcorder in dusty places.
(4) When using the video heads without cleaning them for a long time.
Before you make important recording, clean the video heads and make a test recording first.
We also recommend cleaning the video heads after use before storing the camcorder.
