Listen carefully to the beeps and note the pattern. There won't be just 6 beeps in a row (unless the motherboard is very sick and needs replacing). There will be two or three groups of beeps separated by pauses. The code tells you what problem the motherboard ran into while trying to start. There are also 4 indicator LEDs on the rear that light either yellow or green and can give more information. A list of the beep codes and light patterns is available here.

Common problems are memory errors or troubles with on-board video. If this doesn't help you work out the trouble, please post a follow-up comment with the beep code you're hearing and I try to be of more assistance.

Memory upgrade on gx280 beeps on boot but doesn't start. memory beeps 1 234 5 6

When your computer emits beeps when you power on the computer, it's usually means that you have a memory issue. Try re-seating the memory modules and power on the computer. If you have more the one module, insert one at a time and power on the computer. The other issue is if that model supports 4 gig memory.

My dell inspiron beeps 20 times at sturtup

I wonder if you have a keyboard issue. Most times the constant beeping means the keyboard is bad, but it doesn't normally boot or revert back to 5 or 4 beeps.

Amber light on the motherboard is on i hear several beeps and it doesn't boot up

Usually beeps emitting from the computer indicate a memory error.. Try to re-seat the memory modules. If that doesn't work then try removing 1 module at a time to see if you have a bad memory stick.

Six beeps at post and no joy with boot up

The exact meaning of the beeps for Dell depends on their... rhythm.

http://www.nullamatix.com/dell-diagnostic-beep-code-troublshooting-chart/

Six beeps might indicate a simple CMOS failure caused by a bad battery, which is easy to replace.
