Just plug that baby in.

When you format it you will have a new drive in your my computer.

From their you can use it just like your c drive. However you'll just select the (For example it comes up as F:) F:\ drive to save to.

Their are more complex ways of using the drive, and integrate it with your C:\ space. However when you have some hardware problems you could loose all the information so i do not recommend that.

What to do?

Plug in the drive then boot up the pc

If nothing comes up in My Computer then:
Right Click My Computer
Click Manage
Click Disk Manager
A little wizard will pop up, follow the instructions, and when the option comes to format FORMAT in NTFS! this is important for larger than 4gb files.

While your editing home movies you will most likely break that 4gb barrier fast :)

Hi. My computer says I ejected my WD My Passport external drive but it was not properly ejected. How can I fix this. I need all my thesis files but computer can read the external drive! Help please!

Try to test your WD Ext HDD to a different computer and check if you will get the same problem.

If the same problem persist try to use a different cable for your WD Ext HDD.

If still fails kindly ask the store where you bought the WD Ext HDD on how to retrieve your files and have WD EXT HDD replaced?

If your WD Ext HDD works to a different computer then update the BIOS and Chipset of the computer where your WD Ext HDD connected previously.

Hope this helps.

WD 500 My Book Prem Ed will not power up

If it's less than a year old, call WD and get a replacement power brick and see if that works.

You could of course also buy a replacement and see if that works.

If the unit is not powering up, the HD inside is almost certainly good. Data recovery is trivial. All you have to do is open the case(hard part) and remove the hard drive. Find a desktop you can install it into and copy the data to a new external HD. If you don't have a a desktop available, you can buy a USB to SATA adapter with a power adapter for about $15-20 that will work well. If you're creative you could probably re-install one of these kits into the existing enclosure for a permanent fix.

This problem often happens because of the cable, try to move the cable near the connector of your drive. by this time access the devive manager, and check if there is changes in the list while you change cable's position, if so, your cable is defect.
