I've never heard of a manually-filled furnace humidifier. We use a whole-house, stand-alone humidifier (manually-filled) and it works just fine. Easy to fill, easy to clean, easy to maintain. Even if there were such a thing as a manually-filled furnace humidifier, in the case you describe, I would much rather stay inside to fill my humidifier than get bundled up and step outside into the cold to do it. Select from the appropriate category of humidifiers by Essickair, then click on the "More Info" link after which you should choose the specific model humidifier that you own. After doing so you will find a link to the lower right(under "Resources") saying "Owners Manual."

I have a Vicks, similar, and it recomends a little table salt in the water to create a mist, read your manual and see if this helps. Don't go overboard on the salt, or you'll have old faithful instead of a mist!
