SOURCE: my monte carlo overheats when idle but no signs of a blown head gasket nor water in oil. the temp gauge will go up to half way then the radiator fans will come on. when i'm driving it will go down to

When the engine is "over heating" are the radiator cooling fans running on high speed?

Has there been any engine work performed on the vehicle lately?

Let me know.

SOURCE: How do i solve rim leak on a rover 25

If the problem is sealing around the bead, the tire needs dismounted and the corrosion cleaned off of the wheel. In extreme cases I've had to use a thin layer of spray gasket maker to fill in some rough areas. If the problem lays in the wheel where the tire does not contact, some grinding and RTV can fix it, also with the tire dismounted.

It appears that you have a minor leak at where a hose attaches to an engine or radiator pipe. When the engine is hot, any small leak will evaporate quickly and therefore not be seen. As the coolant heats up it will expand into the overflow tank but once the engine is stopped the extra heat build up will force the coolant out the leaking joint. As the engine cools, the leak prevents the coolant from being sucked back from the overflow tank.

Check all hoses and clamps including heater hoses and those pesky little bypass hoses in the cooling system for a good tight fit and replace any hoses that have gone hard or have become soft and stretched. Those spring type hose clamps tend to be less effective in clamping as the hoses age. Worm drive ones are the best to use.

If unsure take vehicle to a cooling system specialist and have them do a pressure test and more thorough diagnosis.

If problem persists, then it could indicate a problem with the head gasket (Usually caused by allowing engine to become excessively overheated when cooling system has run dry) allowing very hot high pressure combustion gases into the engine water jacket, which super heats the coolant in the engine block, which then boils off, and is released via the cap or any leaks. If the head gasket is really bad it will leak water into the cylinders and into the oil in the sump. This is indicated by an emulsion of water and oil mix on the dipstick. You will also see white smoke (water vapour) from the exhaust.

SOURCE: rover 25 1.4 2004 hot engine and radiator fan problem

Yes, it is possible to install a thermostat backwards, though unlikely. If the thermostat isn't opening properly, the hot engine coolant won't be flowing over the cooling fan switch and give you high temps. I would first determine if the thermostat was opening at all, and if it is, is it opening at the proper temp. I have had many new thermostats that, while new, didn't work correctly. To check the cooling fan motor, turn on the AC(if equipped) and the fan should engage. If no AC, disconnect the cooling fan switch, and the fan should engage. Check for power and ground at the fan motor. If you have both power and ground, the fan motor is faulty

My car is slow in starting making white smoke when fires up smells a bit fuel is also low in power when driving under 2500 revs.any ideas to this problem not believe to be maf or air sensor

White smoke is usually a sign that there is a problem with the cooling system. Blue smoke is fuel related.
Have the cooling system checked at a guess I would say this is water leaking into the cylinders which indicates a cylinder head gasket fault. A faulty cylinder head gasket would also cause slight loss of compression which could explain the loss of power. remove the oil filler cap on the engine if there is a sign of a light brown (cream) coloured substance (water contaminated oil) on the cap or in the cover then the head gasket needs replacing also check the dipstick.
Hope this helps.

My 2003 rover 25 has started using a litre of antifreeze every 2 or 3 days and i've been told it could be the head gasket thats gone is there any truth in this

Head Gasket or intake gasket, is most likely, the coolant
has to go somewhere

Cracked Head or Block or Intake, etc

If your lucky a coolant tube seal or rusted out
part that leaks, water pump leak, any number of places

I would hope you parked it ,now the head gasket
question came up

I would hope the vehicle has been tested for the problem
& your not using it & asking about this & that

You say every few days,I say day one, I stop using it, as
you know there is problem

Keep in mind

Head Gasket Fails -- just saying

Where does that coolant go?

Into the exhaust converter & past the oxygen sensors

There done, ruined,IF you drove it one or two days

So are the spark plugs

If you got hot air pockets from low coolant, well you get
the idea, not good, for the motor or your wallet

Oil became milky in rover 200

Milky oil is a sign of blown head gasket.
Start with a oil change.
Monitor the coolant level.

Lose of coolant will confirm head gasket leak.

My car has recently had an engine fitted and blows white smoke from the exhaust and it is stopping the engine running

white smoke means your burning oil typically caused by a faulty head gasket.

How many miles before i change the timing belt, and head gasket on a city rover 2006 model solo

There is no set mileage to change a head gasket. You only replace the gasket if you have a problem with it. Change the timing belt as outlined in your owners manual. If you do not have an owner's manual, then call your local Land Rover dealer for the correct mileage to change the belt.

Water leaking from reservoir intermittently.

Is there any white smoke? These were bad for head gaskets but they also had problems with the inlet manifold gasket. the inlet manifold has a water jacket and gasket failure bleeds coolant into the cylinders.
