We have 2 4100e. One is a few years old, the other 1 week old. We are getting ''NG-Poor line quality'' errors on the send confirmations. They are hooked to separate lines. Sometimes they work, sometimes they do not. We have had the telephone company here almost daily and they keep saying the lines are ok. Is it a coincence that the problems started about the same time they changed to new copper main lines on our street??
It appears that you have interference somewhere in the office. Have you recently gone to DSL in the office? A DSL line transmits a signal that requires a filter to receive only phone signals instead of the DSL signal. If the fax machines are receiving an unfiltered DSL signal, this would explain the interference. If this is not the case, the link below is a Brother's Solution to the NG Poor line quality. Best of luck to you with your fax problem. Greg http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us_ot/en/faq/faq/000000/000200/000009/faq000209_002.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=mfc6490cw_all

Digital answer phones record the message on a memory chipset in the same way old tape machines did using a magnetic support. Quality can only be improved by the technology itself, problem is with your specific machine. If you have a broadband filter try replacing it. Test the machine on a different phone socket and see if it makes any difference. Check on your answering machine settings, you should find an option to control volume.
To check your line quality is very simple. Unplug the fax from the telephone line and substitute it with a normal single line telephone. Make an incoming and outgoing call. if you hear any echo or crackle on the line when you are being quiet, then you have a noisy line and you should report it to your telephone company to have the line cleaned. If it is quiet then the problem lays with the fax. There are ways around the problem in the software of the machine but its quite complicated and best left to a trained brother engineer.
Does the machine actually answer the incoming call? If so does it give an error code? Are you using the genuine brother line lead? Finally make sure the line lead is plugged into the "line" socket and not the "tel" socket.
There are two possible reasons why your printer display the error message.
1. Poor Line Condition - electrical interference on the line -Make sure electrical or electronic appliances do not interfere with the printer's phone line - poor line connection - If you have a phone try connecting it directly to line outlet. Listen to the dial tone, if you hear noisy and static, then you will need to call your local telephone company cause there is a problem in your phone line. If dial tone is clear and stable then try checking the telephone line cord that you use to connect your printer from the line outlet, replace if broken. - alarm system
or another device on same line, these interferes with transmission / reception of the fax machine. Try connecting the printer all alone and then try sending a fax.
2. Memory Full - There is no space to store incoming fax messages. Delete all stored fax messages.
I had the same problem trying to send out faxes out using my Brother MFC 7340. I use a magic jack phone line. Page 106 of the user manual says if sending via VOIP phone line, you should press menu, then 2, 0, 1 to select "Basic (for VOIP) mode. Then press ok. Then press stop/exit. This cuts the modem speed down to 9600 bps and turns ECM off. Then retry to send the fax. I did that and can now send and receive faxes.
You can adjust the Compatibility mode. This adjusts the sensitivity of the machine to interference on the phone line by lowering the transmission speed:
a. Press Menu, 2 (Fax), 0 (Miscellaneous), 1 (Compatibility)
b. Press Up or Down arrow to select "Basic"
c. Press OK.
d. Press Stop/Exit.
e. Try resending the fax. If the problem continues we recommend you try the unit on another line at the current location or another location. Always restart your machines after you made changes, that way you will see the results.
