Your Lexmark X1270 printer was designed for rosoft Windows 2000; Microsoft Windows XP; Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64; Microsoft Windows Vista; Microsoft Windows Vista x64; and Microsoft Windows 7 as it is indicated in its webpage. Remember, drivers and softwares are always limited from the manufacturer's releases. I recommend that you upgrade your printer to a Mac compatible printer. You may choose from this LINK.
I hope this works for you. Kindly reply/comment for further assistance. Good Luck!
It is compatible according to the Win7 compatibility Center. If you have any problems, check your cables or network settings.

Go to the brother website and download the correct windows vista driver.
Unplug the printer from you laptop.
Install the driver. Wait for the driver to prompt you to plug in the printer and then you should be good to go.
Brother's website states that the drivers are built into XP:
An in-box driver is a driver that is supplied with the Windows XP operating system. These drivers have been developed in conjunction with Microsoft.See the list on this Brother link: http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/windowsxp/us.html
