Why does my Rigid shop vac make a high pitched whistle with a long hose on it but not a short hose?

The high pitched whistle that you are hearing from your Rigid shop vac with a long hose may be due to several reasons. Here are some possible causes:
  1. Airflow restriction: When you use a longer hose with your shop vac, it increases the airflow resistance, which can cause a whistling noise. This is because the motor has to work harder to maintain suction, and the increased resistance can cause turbulence in the airflow, creating the whistling sound.
  2. Hose size: The size of the hose can also affect the whistling noise. A smaller diameter hose can increase airflow resistance, which can cause the same issue as a longer hose.
  3. Clogs or blockages: If there are clogs or blockages in the hose, this can also cause the whistling noise. Check the hose and attachments for any obstructions, and remove them if necessary.
  4. Vacuum motor issue: In some cases, the whistling noise may be due to a problem with the vacuum motor itself. This could be caused by a damaged impeller, a loose fan blade, or other issues with the motor.
To fix the issue, you can try the following:
  1. Shorten the hose: If possible, try using a shorter hose to see if the whistling noise goes away. A shorter hose will reduce the airflow resistance and may help to eliminate the noise.
  2. Check for blockages: Inspect the hose and attachments for any clogs or blockages. Remove any obstructions that you find.
  3. Clean or replace the filter: If the vacuum filter is dirty, this can cause airflow resistance and make the motor work harder, leading to the whistling noise. Clean or replace the filter as necessary.
  4. Check the vacuum motor: If none of the above solutions work, you may need to inspect the vacuum motor for any issues. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, you can take the shop vac to a professional for repair.

Kirby works with the brush roller head; but not the hose attachment (won't start with hose attachment)

The part of the hose that attaches to the vacuum should push on the switch on the front of the vacuum so it won't come on without the nozzle or hose attached. Inspect the hose to see if that part may be broken or not making good contact to activate the switch,

I have a Electrolux Vacuum that is around 25 years old. It works good, except the hose is stopped up. I would like to know how to go about unstopping the hose.

What may work is to hook another vacuum like a shop vacuum to the hose backward to try to suck whatever is in the hose out.
Another thing to try is completely disconnect the hose and try running water through it backward. (less messy to do this outside.)
Or just get a straight stick long enough and work it to loosen whatever is clogging the hose. Don't force it though.

No suction when using hose attachments - motor runs and under cupboard vent works - just not able to use just the hose with attachments

does the vacuum turn on when hose plugged into wall outlet assuming your using central vac. if it does not turn on then the metal band in the hose end is possibly cracked.

No suction when using the hose

Hi Pam...
Sounds like you have a blockage in your hose, remove it and try to see if there is debris in the hose...remove the debris and it should work fine.

When i try to use it on manual the green light will flash then turn off, but works on automatic

The hose button will only work if the hose is unplugged from the side. Sounds like it thinks the hose is still in it. There is a small magnet in the end of the hose. Over time they rust and come apart. Bits may be stuck to sensor where hose clicks in on the side.

Part of the hose is torn. Do I have to replace the whole hose or can it be repaired ?

Which hose is torn? The hose underneath or the hose with the extension wand in the handle?

Where I work we can sometimes repair the wand hose, and the little hose undernath is usually a cheap costing replacement.

Suction on the hose does not work

yes check the hose. One way to do that is to push a dry garden hose through it.

Cracked hose for Bissell SpotBot

I found a site that carrys them, not sure if they are out because just as I was about to order one I decided to try and fix mine since the crack was right up next to the handle. http://www.svcvacuum.com/bissell/steamer_hose.htm
All I did was unscrew the two screws where the button is for releasing the water on the hand piece. I thin squeezed the clamp together to remove the water hose. Once that was removed I cut the hose and then PRYED out the part of the hose in the hand piece. I then cut the hose down where the crack was. Feed the "water hose" back through the hole in the handle (I heated it with a lighter just a tiny bit to make it soft and worked it through the hole which I just enlarged a slight bit) and with pliers work it back on. Don't forget the clamp. Next just work the outter hose back into the handle but make sure to use a glue or silicone sealer or both.
Even if you get a new hose Im not sure it will come with the handle. To connect the hose to the Machine part just push in that little plastic "dot" and pull out the hose at the same time. Then remove the old hose by the directions above. There is no need to remover the inner clear hose from the machine part, only the handle

Problem hose

Try gently feeding a thin, springy wire down the tube to find is there is a blockage further up.
