I have a problem with oil blowing back through the dipstick in my 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ 6 cyl engine... I have built a few engines of various types over the years and have done all my maintenance all my life but I seem to have a problem I can't figure out ,1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ 6cyl engine. All seemed fine until I replaced my PCV valve. Well a short time later, I noticed a lot of oil drips in my garage. I figured the PCV was wrong and went back to the store with it and sure enough it wasn't. I got the "right" one but I still have a problem. Now here is where it gets a little funny. Not ha, ha funny either. I cranked the engine, and left it running for 1 1/2 hours. I came back and not a drop of oil on the engine or the floor. By the way, all the oil wetness is around the dipstick tube. So, I drove it 5 miles to my buddy's gas station and back and the engine was soaked in oil from the dip stick tube back. I cleaned it off again and this time I removed the dipstick from the tube, fitted a rubber hose about 2 ft long over the dipstick tube and ran it up to a little empty plastic can and did the 2 mile round trip again. There was several ounces of oil in the can that came out the dipstick tube, through the hose into the can! I reved the engine several times and could not get a drop to come out. It only blows out the dipstick tube when the Jeep is actually moving down the road. This is freaking me out! I can do nothing to cause oil to blow out the tube sitting still. By the way, I didn't exceed 55 mph to the store and back and drove at normal engine speeds. My first thought was a broken compression ring creating pressure in the crankcase. But if this was true, the pressure would be created whether or not the Jeep was moving or not. Right? Today I replaced the PCV valve again. I put a new oil fill cap on. I checked the PCV valve for a "rattle". It rattles. I cranked the engine to see if vacuum was present at the PCV valve and it is. I have good vacuum. I have good oil pressure, about 40+ at speed. Any one got any ideas?? Gary Browning

No solution from me, Note: Sounds like your pretty familiar with the Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV). You said the valve is pulling a vacuum I am assuming it is from the intake manifold side correct? With the PCV was working sure seems like it would keep the oil from coming out of the dipstick tube. I am stumped as well, sounds almost like too much blow by from the cyclinders you already stated that with the possible broken compression rings?

SOURCE: engine blowing oil from oil filler cap

I had the same problem. I changed the pcv valve and checked the hose. It still did the same thing. Then I checked the metal tubing that the hose connects to and found it was full of hardened gunk. I sprayed PB Blaster into the tube let it soak for awhile. Then took an old choke cable, put it on a drill and ran it into the tube like a drain snake. It took a while of doing this over and over but eventually got it cleared out. Now, no more oil all over the engine and hood compartment.

SOURCE: Oil blowing out of the dipstick tube.

On top of the valve cover there is a fresh air breather unit. Make sure the breather unit is not plugged.
Also the fixed orifice PCV should be clear. Find a tool that will go through the orifice and make sure it is clean.
Remove the vacuum hose and check it for cracks or internal damage. With the engine running, make sure you have vacuum through the hose.
Let me know when your finished cleaning the crankcase breather system.

SOURCE: 1994 jeep YJ Automatic transmission does not shift

For your sake I hoping its a shift solenoid. Yes its in the valve body and there is some transmission surgery involved but its not that pricey. Otherwise it could be the shifter , manual shift valve, 3rd gear linkages etc. This is major tranny surgery. keep me posted.

I have a 1989 jeep yj it started blowing oil out the crankcase vent any ideas why

PCV bad. (or its hose pinched, clogged or even backward)
  1. PCV is failing fix this first for $5 or remove it and see how bad blow by is. visually. (remove only valve covers side to test )
  2. or cracked or collapsed piston.
  3. or cracked head gasket, compression tests pass?
yes one of the best jeeps are YJ, not full 10 stinking married computers , wish every day I never sold my 2002,
2002 is the last good jeep IMO

blow by is most mostly past bad piston rings, even warped cylinder from past overheated engine,

The YJ used a 2.5 L AMC 150 I4 or optional 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 until 1990

which one, 4 or 6 cylinders.???

1990 jeep wrangler motor has no compression

Take it back to the shop that did the engine overhaul. No compression at all? They did something very wrong. Does the distributor shaft and rotor turn when cranking the engine? Are you sure your compression tester is working and hasn't failed? Is it possible they got the timing for the crank and camshaft all wrong? Take it back to them and demand they fix it, if it truly has no compression. It will never start without compression.

My 1991 wrangler 6 cyl runs for few min then what appears to be exhaust and some oil comes out pvc and dipstick, whats wrong?

Sounds like a compression ring in one of your cylinders has broken and compression is being pushed into oil pan. Cylinder compression getting past the piston, instead of going out the exhaust it's going into oil pan and coming through engine (dipstick, air cleaner, PCV.) You'll need to have a compression test to confirm.

I had a fire in the engine of my 93 yj 4 cyl i need to replace the engine wiring harness can it be replaced with the wiring harness from jeeps of other years

I would really try to get the same year and motor as you have. There is some much that often changes from year to year, and engine to engine.
