Yes it is compatible for a set top box. The yellow, white, and red inputs on the television will accept a set top box. BUT you must have the correct set top box, which is one that is meant for an RCA/composite connection. This television will not accommodate a set top box that is meant for an hdmi or component cable for hdtv.
This may be more of a computer problem then a TV. If I'm right, here's the solution: Computers don't always recognize video output without a little assistance. You should plug your computer back into your normal computer screen AND your TV at the same time. I guess that only works if your computer has two VGA outputs, but most desktop PCs do. Anyways, once that's done, open up your computers display settings and try to get it to recognize the TV from there (be sure the TV is on the correct input while you do this). If you need more help with the computer side of this, let me know. Also list your computer's model and your operating system.
You should be able to buy a universal remote that will control most devices. Follow the instructions to program the universal remote and it will act just like the original remote.
